Good practical introduction to hive

This book is a good practical introduction to hive, with plenty of examples and explanations on how to run your queries and create your tables, as well as to extend data with UDFs.
It's worth mentioning what it does *not* have, that is, it doesn't talk about hive/hadoop internals, nor about administration. If you're also interested in those topics you should have a look at Programming Hive, but if all you need is just to learn the quirks of HSQL, how to optimize your queries and how to extend hive this book has pretty much all you need.

A complete coverage of Hive

After reading a large part of the book, most Hive users will benefit from it, including those who never had been in contact with Hadoop before. There are a few chapters like the "Join optimizations" chapter which I use as a reference when I wish to refresh my memories about which type of join to define and how to express them. Also, user defined functions are well covered with 4 chapters dedicated to it.

Well rounded tome on Hive

Finally a well rounded and well grounded book on Hive. Everyone thinks that HQL is the beginning an end of Hive, without realizing that there is so much more to this interesting technology. Darren has finally come out with this much needed work that explores all the other key aspects of Hive such as it's storage formats and how they are essential for running efficient map/reduce. The more advanced features such as UDFs. The ability to interact with Hive using non-interactive mechanisms like drivers, thrift server etc. I personally found this book to be very useful and eye opening eventough I have been working with Hive for the past two years. I give this work a two thumbs up.
