What a treasure. Expecting only a collection of smoothies, which was what I wanted at the time, I was delightfully surprised at the expanse of information in this book. The special advantages of the various fruits, vegetables, and additives were invaluable. Knowing which smoothies were "picker-uppers" and which could be substitued for meals was also very helpful. And, finally, having the carbs, sugars, proteins, etc. included with each recipe was fabulous. I have spoken about this book to many friends who have bought it and are glad they did.

I love this book! I have a lot of smoothie books, but I always come back to this one. I have made most of the recipes in this book. and have been greatly pleased with the results. Based on this, I look forward to making the rest of them. There is such a wide variety of liquids, bases, and combinations of fruits and vegetables from which to choose. It has something for everyone's tastes. I like the nutritional information, too. Some smoothie books do not include that information with their recipes. I can't understand the one-star and two-star reviews. The book doesn't have pictures?? Of course, it clearly does. No recipes with fruit??? You've got to be kidding me!! Too much to read....you have the option to read whatever you want. There is a table of contents in the book! I love that feature in a book because it helps me choose which chapters I would like to read first. Then, I go back and read the other chapters I skipped if I choose. Part One (Getting Started) of the book has a chapter on the health benefits of smoothies, a chapter on your daily intake (sample week of smoothies), and a chapter on ingredients and equipment. Many people might find they do not need or want this information, but others might find it vey helpful. Someone new to making smoothies would definitely need and appreciate this information, so I am glad it was included. Granted there are people who think this is a lot of information to be read, but it is not a gigantic amount(the book is only 202 pages). Plus, it is an easy read. Part Two includes the smoothie recipes. To readers considering the purchase of this book, don't base your decision solely on the one-star and two-star reviews. You can clearly see they read the wrong book....that is....if they actually read anything at all! If you have a Kindle, download a sample of the book. This will give you some insight into what this book offers. Taste is the unknown factor because it is subjective to the individual; however, I am sure you will find many of the smoothies to your liking. If you don't have a Kindle, you'll have to rely on the reviews to make an educated assessment. Hopefully, you'll come to the decision to buy this book like I did. If weight loss is your goal, then I want you to know that I lost 15 pounds by making the smoothies recommended in this book. I especially love the Apple Pie Smoothie on page 87! You've got to try it!

I confess it was the beautiful cover that first piqued my interest in the novel “A Shameful Murder“. Atmospheric and foreboding in equal measure.

A well researched historical mystery set in Cork, Ireland in the early 1920s – just after the War of Independence and the partitioning of the country – the novel introduces us to a trio of sleuths led by an unforgettable protagonist.

During this episode of Irish history Cork is a city with a precarious class structure of haves and have nots. The novel accurately depicts the social inequalities of the time with particular emphasis on the lack of women’s rights. The affluent live in mansions with servants. The poor exist with up to nine people living and sleeping in one room.

Cork is prone to flooding, and the year of 1923 was particularly bad. The River Lee encircles the city and the water is both above and beneath the streets.

Each chapter of “A Shameful Murder” is preceded by words of wisdom by Saint Thomas Aquinas from whom our protagonist took her name. Now in her seventies, Reverend Mother Aquinas heads a teaching order of nuns. She uses her keen intellect and empathy to it’s best effect when she discovers the body of a young woman washed up in the flood waters outside the convent. She sends for police Sergeant Patrick Cashman, a former pupil.

Part of a newly formed police force of ‘civic guards’ Patrick is well-suited to police work and makes up for his lack of cleverness by being diligent, hard-working, methodical and tenacious. He along with Dr. Scher, a friend of the Reverend Mother, round out a trio of sleuths who together solve the mystery of the young woman’s death.

The Reverend Mother came from an affluent background and she maintains an insider’s knowledge of the machinations of the upper class. When the body is identified by one of Cork’s rich patriarchs, she uses her contacts to help her gain a picture of what must have happened.

With themes of avarice and social injustice, the novel will appeal to anyone who is interested in historical mysteries and Irish history in particular. Using real places with morbid histories such as Cork’s Eglinton Asylum and the use of a few choice ‘red herrings’ thrown in for good measure “A Shameful Murder” ensures a satisfying mystery series debut.

This is the first book I have read by Cora Harrison and I fully intend to follow the adventures of Mother Aquinas in future novels.

A shameful murder

Reverend Mother Aquinas finds a dead girl during a severe flood, in Cork City of 1923. The deceased was a merchant's daughter, as evidenced by her fine clothes and silk bag. The wealthy are the few in this sullen, impoverished city, having survived a civil war and with turbulence still on-going.

Reverend Mother teaches the poor children so that they may get jobs in shops, but she hates any injustice and she is determined to aid the local Guard, one of her former pupils, in ferreting out the killer.

With many changes of scene and varying points of view, the only danger is that the background at times overwhelms the mystery. Lovers of historical murder stories will enjoy this one for the rich atmosphere and well-realised characters. I've read the Burren mysteries by this author and I'm looking forward to more Cork City tales.

A shameful Murder is the first book about Reverend Mother Aquinas. Set in Ireland in the 1920's, the Reverend Mother finds a washed up body at the gate of the convent chapel. She asks sergeant Patrick Cashman, a former pupil to investigate. There are several clues to go on. The body is dressed to the nines and she was apparently meant to attend the Merchant's ball. There is also a ticket for the Liverpool ferry. Together with Dr Sher, a friend of hers, they uncover the terrible last night of this stranger. What makes Shameful Murder enjoyable, is its authenticity and attention to detail. It is a "period piece", in the best possible way, attention to detail of the time. But a murder is a murder in any time and Harrison goes all out for this story. Bring on the next Reverend Mother book.

A decent introduction to people photography for photographers who have just mastered the basics but not for those over and above

Any review of this book would have to start out by stating that the format of this book is the same as its predecessor “Read this if you want to take great photographs”. It is short, at about 125 pages in length. There is a page of text followed, on the opposite page, by a photograph illustrating the point or theme discussed (i.e., color, lighting, angle, etc.). Hence if someone is looking for a lengthy academic tome on photographing people this is not the book. Then again, this book is not intended as such. It is intended as an introduction to people photography for those who have at least an understanding of the basics of photography. The author explicitly states this in the introduction (p. 7). He writes “a little technical knowledge is important too and I’m going to assume you know some fundamentals like the difference between shutter speed and aperture, leading lines and the rule of thirds”. For those who do not have at least this basic background this book would prove a waste of time. For those who are experienced in the fields (i.e., intermediate or above in terms of skill) this book would probably be too basic, even as an introduction to the subject. The book is really geared to the beginner photographer who has just mastered the basics.

The book covers most of the basics covered of the subject. These include camera angles, the use of color and B&W, lighting, etc. One technical aspect it should cover but does not is depth of field as it relates specifically to portraiture photography. Ironically it has a few pages on depth of field but not specifically on how it is used in photographing people. Another weakness with the book is that it does not cover well the interaction between photographer and subject. One can read this book and not have an idea of how to direct people in the manner needed to get them to put forth the “face” the photographer needs to get on film. Other than this significant weakness (and the depth of field issue) the book is not bad, for its intended audience (a first book for photographers who have just mastered the basics of photography). For photographers at a more advanced level or for those seeking a more thorough introduction to the subject this reviewer recommends Bryan Peterson’s “Beyond Portraiture: Creative People Photography” instead.

In short the book is decent for its intended audience but is quite basic and does not present anything over and above an introduction. It is nothing profound and does not provide any new insights or present the topic in any deep and profound or significantly better way than the typical book on the subject geared to the same audience. It does its job though. 3.5 stars.

Both practical and philosophical

This is a lovely little book, a great companion to Carroll's original Read This If You Want to Take Great Photographs. I am an absolute novice photographer, and find highly technical photography concepts too difficult to hold onto while I'm also trying to capture a shot. This book lets me focus on one small concept at a time, which is great for a novice who just wants to practice.

But this same review could have been said for Carroll's earlier book. What sets this one apart for me is a really simple-but-profound concept, and that's the importance of knowing why you're taking photos in the first place. Carroll's book has helped me think through my own sense of purpose in taking photos of people, which in turn has helped shape the way I'm taking those photos.

Excellent for new photographers

My daughter loves portraiture, and requested this book for Christmas. She especially likes the format, which makes it easy to open the book for a quick tip without committing to read from cover to cover. She is very happy with it.
