Everyone who is interested in the astrology of India is going to want this gorgeously illustrated two-volume set by James Kelleher. It's a gold mine of information, much of which is completely new to most Western students. Like other introductions to Vedic astrology, Path of Light explains the signs, houses, and aspects that Hindu practitioners use. What makes these volumes different, however, is the exciting additional material they contain, such as an invaluable section on the nakshatras (Hindu lunar mansions), which relates the ancient myths associated with these important stars. I was also thrilled to find detailed information about the 36 drekkanas, some of the important subdivisions of the Hindu horoscope, which are too often neglected in Vedic readings in the West. Beautiful illustrations of the nakshatras and drekkanas - many in full color - accompany the text. The artwork is enormously helpful for readers who want to memorize these stellar divisions and the stories associated with them. But once you have the basics down, how do you put together an insightful reading that will actually help your clients? Kelleher addresses the major issues clients ask about (health, career, relationships, children, etc.) and shows you where to look for practical answers in the Vedic horoscope and its subdivisions. Some of the most entertaining portions of the books are Kelleher's descriptions of his travels through the India meeting with astrologers and saints. His personal experiences bring Hindu astrology to life for readers who haven't had a chance to visit the subcontinent yet. About the Author
Author of the recently published two-volume book, Path of light, James Kelleher is a co-founder of the American Council of Vedic Astrology. He received his initial training in India and worked for five years in London as the personal assistant to the world-renowned Jyotishi, M. K. Ghandhi. He then returned to the United States where he has been consulting, lecturing, and teaching Vedic Astrology since 1984. He is one of the primary founders of the American Council of Vedic Astrology and the American College of Vedic Astrology. He is an adjunct professor of Jyotish at Hindu University of America. He has been awarded the titles of Jyotish Kovid and Jyotish Vachapasti, by the Indian Council of Astrological Sciences. He also maintains a busy private practice in Los Gatos, CA.

Path of Light Review

Path of Light (both volumes) is probably the best book I have read on Vedic Astrology. I have read many jyotish books, but this one is unique. It is very clear that James Kelleher has taken a great deal of time and energy in producing this physically beautiful, well-written classic. Volume one sets the stage by fleshing out all of the basic symbolism necessary for chart interpretation. It covers the planets, signs, houses and nakshatras in depth. I particularly like the way he presents the stories related to each nakshatra, as well as the fantastic, original paintings of the nakshatras. Volume two gives a clear and effective method of chart interpretation that shows how to interpret the various domains of life, using an abundance of interesting chart examples. Mr. Kelleher's method for using of vargas, has really helped me understand how to use them, and has totally changed how I look at charts. I absolutely loved both of these books and would recommend them to anyone seriously interested in Jyotish.

Excellent Book Borne Out of Years Of Experience

If you want a theoritical book that is academeic, look elsewhere. If you want a book written by an excellent vedic astrologer who generously shares his more than 20 years of experience, buy this and Vol 2. Vol 1 puts down an excellent foundation. The sections on Nakshatras is especially revealing. Vol 2 goes in to Varga analysis which is simply Superb. Vol 2 is simply the best book I have read in Vedic Astrology on Varga analysis. The spiritual stories interspersed is icing on the cake. In my opinion these two books are a MUST for any serious student of Jyotish. The techniques are powerful enough for you to try on your sample charts and come away astonished. In Vol 1 I was especially impressed with the balanced approach to the dushthana houses (they are not all gloomy). Relationship analysis using Venus/Mars placements is also superb. Buy these books, you will NOT regret it.

Easily one of the best books on the subject

James Kelleher's "Path of Light" volumes are a worthy and important contribution to Vedic Astrology by a man who has devoted over thirty years of his life to its study and practice. Beginning with the end, his Bibliography is an impressive list of the well and not-so-well known classics of Vedic Astrology that James sources, alongside an equally impressive list of modern authors and their works. To reach for the stars, you have to stand on the shoulders of giants, and James has clearly done his homework and paid his dues. And while there is plenty to love about this book, I will list briefly what makes it one of a kind, and a must-have for beginning, intermediate, and even advanced students of Jyotisha. Some books have some of these features, but none that I know have all of them:

1. Compelling list of Drekkanas and some of their practical applications, based on research and years of trial & error.

2. A guided tour through the subcharts that comprehends classic as well as modern techniques (from Parashara to Iyer, and everyone in between)

3. A practical depiction of the Nakshatras and their uses, including techniques by Satyacharya and others.

4. Detailed lists of Planet & House combinations. Unlike other "cookbooks" that disempower you by listing such combos, James has a knack for making his delineations insightful and instructive, so that you actually learn from reading them. My guess is this is because he is not parroting what other authors have written, but injecting his own experience from real-life charts.

5. James opens up his teachings in audio/visual presentations at jameskelleher.com which serve to bolster the information in his books.

6. Discussion of topics not normally found in other "serious" Jyotisha books, such as what kind of pets, vehicles, and residences a chart indicates

7. Finally, my favorite part... the "Author's Journal"... biographical sketches between chapters that give us a window, an insight into James' life & experiences in India, as a student and practitioner, as a spiritual seeker and just an everyday guy traipsing across continents in the service of his art. In an era when so many Vedic Astrologers are closed and guarded, their methods restricted to an 'elite' few, their reputations at stake, James puts it all on the line and shares his insights with candor and humility. Many of us, students and teachers, would do well to follow his example.

These are but a few of the treasures contained in "Path of Light" Volumes 1&2. Highly recommended reading... even advanced Jyotishis will learn much, if their minds are open.

First of all my review is on the 1979 version of this book. It has been in my possession that long. Once again today, it helped me drag up a mathematical fact I had long forgotten.
In 1976 I graduated from college with an associates degree in engineering. I had high school algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus behind me. Also with my two year degree, I had calculus, analytical geometry and differential equations as well. I needed a single reference that would cover everything. Then I happened upon this book in a bookstore. What a prize this was!
Since that time, I have completed both my B.S.M.E and a Masters in Mechanical Engineering and I have this dog eared book beside me at all time. From looking up linear algebraic equations, differential calculus, vector analysis, complex variables, all the way to the formula for the eccentricity of an ellipse for my son this evening, this book has baled me out of referring to ten other books. It is well worth the investment.
Ironically, years later when discussing a geometric equation with a co-worker he commented that he relied on a great reference he found in book store many years earlier while attending college. You got it, it was the same book.
What I can't speak to is the last two chapters that are new to this edition. Mine only goes to Chapter 20.
What I also should note, as a Mechanical engineer using this, I found it incredibly useful. I have no idea if a person that does not regularly use geometry, trigonometry, algebra, calculus, linear algebra, etc., would get very much use from it or not. For students in this field I found it to be very useful. Basically, read the table of contents Amazon provides and make your own judgement.

Invaluable Reference Book

For those of us who forgot our laplace transforms, indefinite integrals and differential equations the day we set foot out of school, this book provides a handy, easy to use reference.
The book is organized into 22 chapters taking the user from algebra to the properties of space curves and surfaces. The text is straightforward: examples and lots of them.
If you are looking for a text to learn mathematics - this is the not the book for you. But, if you need help to dust off the cobwebs, or to find a usable example to solve a complex problem - it is the right book.

Jim Sheeler has specialized in covering the impact of the war at home for the "Rocky Mountain News" since the first Colorado casualty of the war in Iraq. He won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing for his story aFinal Salutea and has won numerous other local and national writing awards. Born in Houston, Texas, Sheeler graduated with a degree in journalism from Colorado State University in 1990 and earned a masteras degree in journalism from the University of Colorado in 2007. His book of collected obituaries, "Obit: Inspirational Stories of Everyday People Who Led Extraordinary Lives," was published in June 2007.

A Heartbreaking Tribute

I remember reading about Woodrow Wilson's agony, as he prepared to address Congress, to ask for the US to enter WWI. All he could think of were the boys who would be killed or maimed as a result of his words. Witnesses said his face was actually contorted, perhaps a harbinger of the stroke he would have, a few years later. Before entering the chamber, he stopped in front of a mirror, and physically pushed his face back into a normal mode. In recent decades, one wonders if Presidents are all too cavalier about sending young men to die in questionable wars. One thinks of Lyndon Johnson telling the troops to "nail the coonskin to the wall" or George W. Bush in his flight suit, Top Gun, "Mission Accomplished" moment. "Final Salute" should be required reading for every President.

Through the eyes of those who have to perform the horrible task of notifying the next of kin of the death of their loved ones, the book tells the story of several soldiers, marines, and sailors who didn't make it home. One comes to know them well, and grieves for them and their families as they go through this agony. Lives interrupted, cut short. Children who will never know their fathers. Young war widows trying to survive. Parents who must bury a child. All this in the aftermath of "the knock" on the door. The pictures almost take your breath away.

This book is not about glory, not about conquest. In the end, I think it is about loss and love...the love of family members, the love of comrades in arms, the love of Country. As Memorial Day draws near, the sacrifices these people made, on both sides of "the knock" should never be forgotten. This is not an easy book, but you shouldn't miss it.

When I was in the military I was sent on a classified mission when I was nineteen years old. No one in the entire world that knew me, cared about me, or loved me, knew where I was going or what I was doing. I carried two fears within me during this time. The first fear was obviously of being killed. The second fear was of "THE-VISIT" that my poor, wonderful, loving, unknowing, Parents would get if I was killed. The horrendous, horrifying, ghastly, human reaction by a next of kin that has no reason to worry about a knock on the door by "CASUALTY NOTIFICATION", is too gruesome to imagine let alone put in words.

This book should be read by every single American citizen. But, be warned; it is extremely emotional and you will shed tears. I am an honorably discharged Viet Nam era veteran and I consider myself to be a pretty tough guy. I have faced death and came out on the other side. When I got this book, before I actually started reading it, I went to the center portion which has twenty-four pages of color pictures that range from pictures of our fallen hero's that are depicted in this book, to their mourning families before and after "notification", to a pregnant crying wife, draping herself over the American Flag, that is draped over the coffin containing her husband, to cemeteries, to a ripped apart "last letter" home from a fallen American Hero. As if the pictures weren't powerful enough the captions carry additional emotional power of their own. I could not make it through the pictures without tears coming to my eyes!

People watch the news and they read papers and magazines about the cost and damage of war, but this book to me is the echo of the story that isn't heard when you turn off your TV or throw the papers and magazines away. Reading this book makes me prouder than ever that I served my country honorably... and it reinforces within my very soul, what I've never taken for granted... and that's the blessing that I came home alive. I could not go more than five or ten pages at a time without my eyes losing its battle to fight back tears. I have my Honorable Discharge displayed between my family room and my kitchen, and under it I've always had the following quote displayed:

A Humble Presentation

This is a fine work of quiet journalism. Mr. Sheeler has written vignettes from his personal observations of our current military burial practices and rituals, from family notification to points yet undefined, if only because some of these counselors remain in contact with some of the families. These are matters of depth and duration.

These are his accounts of the daunting job of those who bring terrible news to the "Next of Kin", and of the next of kin themselves. Such journalism is difficult to do cleanly and honestly. He does a remarkable job of not inserting himself into the chapters. He was, by the testimony of United States Marine Colonel Beck, most respectful of the fallen and of their families. Bias may be inevitable, but I find none here to cloud or distract or distort these sad events.

Each story is only as long as necessary. No editorializing. No purple embellishment. With such clarity he lays before us so that each touches us. First each alone, and then in a gradual appreciation of the both range and the commonality of them all. They are moving and enlightening.

The only time you get a sense of this author is when he bares the events where he is himself involved. After all, he really was there and in contact with the families and others. He cannot deny it by omission. But as he works through the difficulties of not being that in-your-face newsman we usually read or see, he actually further illuminates the courage of these families.

I started off by mentioning burial rituals and practices. Mr. Sheeler has a keen eye and ear. He does much to record the ceremonial side as well as the personal side. Indeed they touch profoundly in his renditions. Things sometimes vary by service. He points them out to us. He supplies quite a lot of information in a subtle way as the book unfolds. Such careful presentation is artful without artifice. Here is beauty and pain, ache and remembrance, truth and respect. Please read this book.
