Great for routine Blood Banking practice.
By Juelmer
I just got the third edition of Basic and Applied Concepts of Blood Banking and Transfusion Practices and it seems like a well-balanced textbook for training medical laboratory students and useful guide for instructors as well. It includes useful study questions for self-assessment and summaries of important knowledge to remember. There are online case studies and access to the laboratory manual. For instructors it has a collection of test bank scenarios with answers to exercises. It also has PowerPoint presentations with the images in the book. Our institution is using this book for the Medical Technologist program starting on 2013. I hope it will help students as well as instructors in developing strong and useful knowledge in blood banking and transfusion practice.

This book could be a lot better
By KailuaChick
This book could be a lot better. There are some concepts that are passively mentioned and never clearly explained. Some chapters have many examples and some chapters have none. The examples are immensely helpful and I just wish there were more! The answers to the critical thinking questions are nowhere to be found online and some of them are not mentioned in the book. I feel like my learning would be greatly improved if I had access to these to see if I'm truly understanding the more complicated concepts.

Could be better
By rose
This book explains things well. But, it always helps me to have the answers to the questions in the back. There are study questions and critical thinking exercises that include case studies. There are no answers in the book for these critical thinking exercises! Case studies are all over the boards! Why am I not given the answers to these? Why the paperback ? It will surely rip if used to refer to as the years progress.

The Maisky Diaries: Red Ambassador to the Court of St James's, 1932-1943, by Ivan Maisky

The terror and purges of Stalin’s Russia in the 1930s discouraged Soviet officials from leaving documentary records let alone keeping personal diaries. A remarkable exception is the unique diary assiduously kept by Ivan Maisky, the Soviet ambassador to London between 1932 and 1943. This selection from Maisky's diary, never before published in English, grippingly documents Britain’s drift to war during the 1930s, appeasement in the Munich era, negotiations leading to the signature of the Ribbentrop–Molotov Pact, Churchill’s rise to power, the German invasion of Russia, and the intense debate over the opening of the second front.

Maisky was distinguished by his great sociability and access to the key players in British public life. Among his range of regular contacts were politicians (including Churchill, Chamberlain, Eden, and Halifax), press barons (Beaverbrook), ambassadors (Joseph Kennedy), intellectuals (Keynes, Sidney and Beatrice Webb), writers (George Bernard Shaw, H. G. Wells), and indeed royalty. His diary further reveals the role personal rivalries within the Kremlin played in the formulation of Soviet policy at the time. Scrupulously edited and checked against a vast range of Russian and Western archival evidence, this extraordinary narrative diary offers a fascinating revision of the events surrounding the Second World War.

Maisky diaries, obligatory reading
By Larry Holmes
By Larry E. Holmes, October 14, 2015
The Maisky diaries, written by the Soviet Union’s ambassador to London from 1932 to 1943, is obligatory reading for anyone interested in Soviet and British politics, diplomacy leading up to the outbreak of World War II, and the relationship between the USSR and Great Britain during the war. Gabriel Gorodetsky, a fellow at All Souls College, Oxford, and emeritus professor of history at Tel Aviv University, has masterfully selected for this publication about one-fourth of the extended diary kept by Maisky. The author of acclaimed studies of Soviet foreign policy, Gorodetsky has provided throughout this volume critical context for developments covered by Maisky and for the ambassador’s interpretation of them.
We learn from Maisky’s account much about the political and diplomatic world in which he moved. The diaries provide new insights and information on the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact, the German invasion of the USSR, and the formation of the Grand Alliance. We also learn much of value about the personality of those with whom Maisky so frequently met. Maisky cultivated relations with many important people, including Churchill, Eden, Beaverbrook, Lloyd George, Joseph Kennedy (the US ambassador to London from 1938 to 1940), and Beatrice Webb. The diaries thereby emphasize over and again the significance of the individual—his or her knowledge, emotions, and idiosyncrasies. And we discover how Maisky’s own behavior defied the stereotype of the alternately aloof, boorish, then aggressive Soviet diplomat. The diaries also dismantle the notion that Soviet officials were devoid of humanity.
Maisky’s telling of what he experienced and Gorodetsky’s presentation of that story frequently make for dramatic reading. This book will be of interest to specialists and non-specialists alike.

Twenty-two years in the making, Gabriel Gorodetsky's latest tour ...
By Amazon Customer
Twenty-two years in the making, Gabriel Gorodetsky's latest tour de force is not to be missed. As articulated in the uniformly positive reviews to hit news stands over the last few weeks, The Maisky Diaires manages to do no less than "rewrite some history which we thought we knew."

Maisky's first hand account of the all important years 1932-1943 in the Court of St. James - by turns delightful, revealing, and shocking - complemented by Gorodetsky's characteristically comprehensive research and analysis and incisive commentary, is a quintessential page turner and will leave you wanting more.

Highly praised and well deserved
By Ronald Zweig
This work – a condensation of a three volume complete edition – has been reviewed in all the British press with such acclaim that I had to look for myself. The reviews are justified. Maisky, the Soviet ambassador in London, writes fluently not only about the diplomacy of the 1930s and the Second World War but also as the ultimate outsider (a Russian and a Communist) observing the British upper class in its incompetency and idiotic prejudices as it struggled to play a role in international affairs. Churchill, and the British public, saved Britain (and, for a while, the world) from the worst consequences of the politics of the British elites. This was a deadly serious matter to the Soviet Union, and Maisky was a keen observer of everything that took place in London during his 11 years there. Gabriel Gorodetsky has done a marvelous job in bringing this material to the English-language reading public with exactly the right editorial touch. Gorodetsky provides the necessary contexts and explanations while always allowing Maisky to speak for himself. This is a marvelous read and a real contribution to the historical writing on the 1930s and the war years.

Review
“The combination of adventure, appealing characters, and high stakes should satisfy middle-grade fantasy fans.” (Kirkus)

“Richards excels at weaving stories that mesh the real, modern world and classic mythologies. Readers will clamor for more, especially those who loved Rick Riordan’s Norse-themed The Sword of Summer.” (Booklist)

“A worthy addition to the recent Norse mythology kick, particularly as it includes some aspects and figures that have been underrepresented to date.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)

About the Author

Jasmine Richards was born in London, grew up in a library, and was the first in her family to go to university. After graduating from Oxford she had a brief stint at New Scotland Yard, then chose a career in publishing over being the next Sherlock Holmes. Today Jasmine is a senior editor at a leading British publishing house and living in Oxfordshire with her husband in an old wool mill. The Book of Wonders is her first novel, and she would love to know what you think about it.

This Modern-Day Mythological Gem is a Wild Ride From Start to Finish.
By Bookreporter
Jasmine Richards, author of the enchanting BOOK OF WONDERS, has penned a mythological masterpiece in the form of her new book, SECRETS OF VALHALLA.

Buzz leads an ordinary life. Aside from his father’s eclectic love of mythology, Buzz’s days are filled with school and soccer games. That is, until he meets the quirky new girl, Mary. Buzz’s acceptance of odd personalities draws Mary to seek out his friendship, and she happily accompanies him on his trip home from school.

Along the way, Buzz and Mary stumble upon missing local weather woman, Eleanor Bright. Tied to a tree, Eleanor pleads for the duo’s help in freeing her from this hostile predicament. Little do they know how much this small act of kindness will change everything.

Eleanor quickly informs Buzz and Mary that she is, in fact, an ancient Norse god named Sunna. Long ago, Sunna and a collection of gods and goddesses known as the day guardians engaged in a battle against Loki, the trickster god of Saturday. Though the day guardians won and imprisoned Loki, the battle left these mighty figures exhausted and nearly powerless. A prophecy issued by the head god, Odin, predicted that Loki and the day guardians would face off again. In order to better their chances, the guardians deposited their powers into a collection of stones known as the Runes of Valhalla, and allowed their sleeping souls to travel down the bloodlines of their most faithful followers. The day guardians now rest in an enchanted sleep within these “host” bodies.

With Sunna unexpectedly held hostage by a sinister dragon, it is up to Buzz and Mary to gather the protected runes and awaken the sleeping gods. After all, without some otherworldly interference, the human realm will rot from the chaos of reliving the same Saturday over and over again.

During this wild quest, Buzz and Mary encounter a series of challenges (including a giant worm of knowledge and a group of bewildered merfolk) that tests their sense of bravery and ability to face unforeseen threats. Armed with just their sense of courage, Mary and Buzz will do whatever it takes to save their loved ones from the decaying human realm. But will their bravery be enough to save the day?

This modern-day mythological gem is a wild ride from start to finish. The author masterfully navigates Buzz and Mary through a host of imaginative and engrossing adventures that keep you on the edge of your seat. Through her thrilling odysseys, Richards will undoubtedly entrust the new generation of readers with a love of mythology. I cannot wait to see what this tremendous talent comes up with next.

I enjoyed it
By Mandy
I received Secrets of Valhalla in return for an honest review from the publisher HarperCollins. Buzz and Mary find the missing weatherwoman in the woods freeing her and finding out that she’s not just the weather woman but a Norse Goddess. After the encounter with Sunna things start to get a little odd like the same Saturday replays over and over for them but something is a little off with each day after the first. The only way to fix everything is to free the day guardians by collecting all the runes and to stop Loki before it’s too late.
Buzz with the help of Mary set out to collect the runes but are quickly joined by Theo one of the boys in school who’s caused trouble for Buzz in the past. They are also joined by Buzz’s Uncle Mark who happened to have a couple of the runes that had ended up at the police station. They learn that Mark and Theo are hosts for the day guardians but without the correct rune the guardian is suppressed. They travel the different worlds searching for the runes before Loki can get them. Do they have what it takes to beat Loki or will they be too late?
I like Buzz and Mary they work well together even when you add in Theo as well as Uncle Mark. It’s been a while since I’ve read a middle grade book but the characters felt more mature than I had expected but I really like it. I felt that I was really able to connect with Buzz as well as Mary. I wasn’t sure about Theo because he started out not a nice guy but at the book progressed he redeemed himself. It’s interesting seeing how the day guardian’s took over their host bodies when the time came.
My husband happened to be looking over my shoulder while I was checking out the new books on Edelweiss when I happened to land on this one. He instantly said he wanted to read it which is code for I’ll read and it and when he has time he’ll read it too. I typically don’t read a lot of Middle grade novels because sometimes they feel very immature but this one worked out better than I expected. The concept for the day guardians with the runes is very interesting and I enjoyed reading about the Norse gods because I don’t know much about them. I also liked that it’s not so much Thor is the main god but the other’s all have an important role in the story. While I haven’t read a Rick Riordan novel I am familiar with them and would suggest Secrets of Valhalla for any fans. This is my first novel by the author but I think she did a great job creating a captivating story kids as well as adults will enjoy.

A winking coming of age story
By Deb Nam-Krane
I received a free review copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is part of what I think of as "mythology fan fiction" along the lines of Rick Riordan. However, unlike those releases, this one combines deities from both Norse and Roman legends.

Of course Loki plays a huge role in the mischief, but he doesn't play quite the role you think. And while some of the plot points will be predictable for older readers, I was genuinely surprised and in many places touched by Richards' insights. I also chuckled over how she has some of the gods adapt to modern circumstances. Oh, those clever gods...

The quest of the two main characters is the real draw though. Both are easy to relate to in their own ways: Buzz, the Every Boy who can't relate to his father and Mary, the awkward, perpetual new kid who has to hide what makes her unique in order to survive. You quickly root for the both of them even when they're in conflict.

Not everything worked perfectly, but what didn't stuck out because most of it worked so well. The end wraps up very nicely.

I'd happily read more from Richards.

Macroeconomics: Institutions, Instability, and the Financial System, by Wendy Carlin, David Soskice

Macroeconomics: Institutions, Instability, and the Financial System integrates the modern monetary framework--based on the 3-equation model of the demand side, the supply side, and the policy maker--with a model of the financial system. The authors comprehensively address the limitations of the mainstream macroeconomic model exposed by the financial crisis and the Eurozone crisis. The text guides the reader through the three principal steps required to integrate the financial system within the macroeconomic model.

Every chapter emphasizes how the different actors in the economy behave and interact: what are they trying to achieve and what limits their ability to put their intentions into practice? This is extended to the modelling of growth, where the role of innovation rents in the Schumpeterian model is highlighted. It is essential that students understand previous periods of growth, stability and crisis in preparing for future shocks. With this in mind, the book enables the reader to interpret long run historical data and to compare institutional detail in different eras and across the world.

Macroeconomics not only develops the critical thinking skills required for academic success, but ensures that students can analyze data, trends, and policy debates with the confidence necessary for a career in economics or finance. It is essential reading for all those interested in learning more about the current macroeconomic system and the role of financial institutions.

Review
"Carlin and Soskice have produced a gem of a book. The teaching of macroeconomics after the crisis has changed surprisingly little, limiting itself to incorporating 'frictions' into otherwise standard models that failed during the crisis. Carlin and Soskice embark on a much more ambitious
venture. They show how the financial cycle and macroeconomics are inextricably linked, with the risk-taking channel as the linchpin. Their exposition is refreshingly original and yet lucid and accessible. This book will appeal to serious students of economics and to all inquiring minds who have
wondered about the role of the financial cycle in macroeconomics."
--Hyun Song Shin, Economic Adviser and Head of Research, Bank for International Settlements and Hughes-Rogers Professor of Economics, Princeton University

"This is, I believe, the first macro-economic textbook effectively to incorporate the lessons of the Great Financial Crisis and to describe how financial frictions can impact the macro-economy. The authors weave together the old mainstream, three equation, model with the newer account of
potential financial disturbances in a lucid and efficient manner. As such, it has a major advantage over almost all other extant textbooks, and will be a boon not only for undergraduates, but also for graduates and those wishing to understand the current working of our macro-economic system, beset
as it has been with financial strains."
--Professor Charles Goodhart, Director of the Financial Regulation Research Programme, The London School of Economics and Political Science

"This illuminating book introduces the reader to macroeconomics in a revolutionary fashion. Namely, by means of very elegant and accessible models that are always based on sound microfoundations and developed against a narrative of the performance and policy regimes of the advanced economies
over the post war period. Unlike most other macro textbooks, this book builds on the most recent research and debates to teach macroeconomics the way it should now be taught: by emphasizing the interplay between macro and finance; by linking growth to innovation, market structure and firm dynamics;
and more generally by taking institutions seriously into account when looking at growth, business cycles, and unemployment and the interplay between them. This book is an absolute must read for students and policy makers, even those with little initial background, who need to be fully acquainted
with modern macroeconomics."
--Philippe Aghion, Robert C. Waggoner Professor of Economics, Harvard

"This is an exciting new textbook. It offers a clear and cogent framework for understanding not only the traditional macroeconomic issues of business cycles, inflation and growth, but also the financial crisis and ensuing Great Recession that have recently shaken the world economy. The
paradigm it offers is highly accessible to undergraduates. Yet at the same time it is consistent with what goes on at the frontiers of the field. Overall, the book confirms my belief that macroeconomics is alive and well!"
--Mark Gertler, Henry and Lucy Moses Professor of Economics, New York University

"To be relevant, economics need to help society understand those phenomena which do it greatest harm - unemployment, inflation and deflation, financial instability, fiscal and banking crisis. Pre-crisis, mainstream economic models failed that societal test and therefore failed society. Wendy
Carlin and David Soskice's important new book is the first step towards redemption, providing students and scholars with a rigorous but accessible framework for understanding what troubles society most."
--Andrew G Haldane, Chief Economist, Bank of England

"The Carlin and Soskice book does a wonderful job of covering the economics behind macroeconomics and the financial system, alongside presenting the latest research on this and the drivers of the great recession. It also has an impressive array of data and examples woven in with theory
explained in a beautifully intuitive way. For any student interested in a refreshingly modern take on the financial crisis and the economics that underlie this, this book is invaluable."
--Nicholas Bloom, Professor of Economics, Stanford University

"One of the first macro textbooks to integrate the lessons of the crisis. An elegant bridge between introductory undergraduate and graduate macro texts"
--Olivier Blanchard, Chief Economist, IMF, and Professor of Economics, MIT

"In the light of the events of the past decade, it is important that a new macroeconomics text attempts to satisfy the demands of those learning and using macroeconomics to be able to access relatively simple models which reflect the ways in which the financial sector interacts with the real
economy. This is by no means an easy task. The new Carlin and Soskice book represents a significant step forward in this regard. Consequently undergraduates, post-graduates and their teachers should be grateful that they can now access teaching materials which have something useful to say about the
financial crisis."
--Professor Stephen Nickell, CBE, FBA. Honorary Fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford

A visit to Grandmother’s house has never been so frightening. . . .

Charlie and Georgie Oughtt have been sent to visit their Grandmother Pearl, and this troubles Charlie for three reasons. The first is that he’s an exceptionally nervous twelve-year-old boy, and he worries about everything. The second is that the other children in his neighborhood who pay visits to their grandmothers never seem to return. And the third is that Charlie and Georgie don’t have any grandmothers.

Upon their arrival, all of Charlie’s concerns are confirmed, as “Grandmother Pearl” quickly reveals herself to be something much more gruesome than even Charlie’s most outlandish fears could have predicted. He and Georgie are thrust into a creepy underworld created from stolen nightmares, where monsters disguised as grandmothers serve an ancient, evil queen by holding children captive as they slowly sap each one of their memories and dreams.

But something is different about Charlie. His worrisome nature, so often a burden, proves an asset in this frightening world. Will he be able to harness this newfound power to defeat the queen and save his sister?

From School Library Journal
Gr 3–6—Twelve-year-old Charlie is a worrier. Nearly everything makes him nervous. He is the complete opposite of his younger sister, Georgie, who is brave and curious. As children in their town begin to disappear permanently while on supposed trips to visit their grandmothers, Charlie and Georgie know that they will be next. When one day their mother, who does not seem herself, suddenly sends them off to meet their grandmothers, both of whom they've been previously told had passed away, this chilling tale truly takes off. It's clear that the grandmothers are not what they seem, but if they're not really grandmothers, then what are they? This is a story filled with creepy hallways, devilish trees, ghostly prisoners, and other sinister haunts. It's also a heartwarming adventure about overcoming one's fears and the unbreakable bond between siblings. Fans of Neil Gaiman's Coraline (HarperCollins, 2002) and Jonathan Auxier's The Night Gardener (Abrams, 2014) will enjoy this middle grade fantasy/horror story. VERDICT Strongly recommended for collections were middle grade horror is in demand.—Pilar Okeson, Allen-Stevenson, New York City

Fear and Courage, in a Land of Nightmares
By Pop Bop
If you enjoyed Jason Segel's "Nightmares!", then you are going to love this slightly more literary take on a similar theme. While "Nightmares!", like many nightmare books for middle-graders, was more of an nightmare-land adventure, "Charlie and the Grandmothers" is both a darker and more liberating variation that for want of a better word is sort of a psychological thriller nightmare adventure with heart.

MILD GENERAL PREMISE SPOILER. Our hero, Charlie Oughtt, is anxious and, if truth be told, (although he represses it), that anxiety arises from his loss, at age 6, of his beloved father. While he has a loving mother and a younger sister, Georgie, who is a classic, high energy, rally-round, pistol, Charlie is just, well, timid.

The magic starts when Charlie and Georgie realize that all of the kids in town have been sent to visit their grandmothers and haven't returned. Charlie and Georgie don't have any grandmothers still living, but one day their mom, in almost a trance, announces the two siblings are leaving, immediately, to visit their grandmother at her farm. With trepidation they leave mom and find themselves in a weird, timeless, creepy, dark place that doen't look like a farm and is run by two very witchy looking/acting old ladies. From there the plot rattles along, moving quickly into a magical dream world at the center of which is a timeless and fearful evil.

Middle grade "?", you wonder. Yes and no. No gore and no really explicit violence, but a lot of danger, threat and fear. There is a build up of tension, a palpable sense of villainy, and a dreamstyle darkness, but it is all manageable and the author blends in regular bits of hope and plenty of spirited sisterly support that reassures the reader that all will end well for Charlie. That said, Charlie must conquer his fears, overcome his anxieties and phobias, and take charge of his young life, in order to prevail.

This is heady, intense stuff, and it is presented with style and craft. Literate and compelling, this was a nice find. (Please note that I found this book while browsing the local library's Kindle books, and downloaded it for free. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

MUST YES. MUCH RECOMMEND.
By Amazon Customer
Very few stories have lines in them that I want to memorize so I can use them occasionally in conversation to make myself look witty.

This one does.

Very, very few stories make me wish I could stop and sketch portraits of the characters and try to finish reading all at the same time.

This one does.

I wish this story were longer. I want to know if the neighbors all returned and are pretending to remember nothing. I want to know where Mateus lives and if he's now trolling 20-somethings on Overwatch under the gamer tag "BadgerBrush." I want to know if there are a couple of old, twisted tree stumps in the world somewhere that are locally famous for having uncanny resemblances to boar- and frog-faced old women.

But most importantly, I will always be kind to crazy old men and women found pushing their carts and wagons along the way, smelling badly and speaking of things that don't make sense. It's not their fault, what happened to them. They were only children trying to save the world.

Entertainingly clever tale about fear and how one young boy learns to face his. Fantastical background, good, evil and 'the rest' that make up a quick-paced, page-turning read. As a grandmother-aged adult, I am not a "children's" fantasy-genre aficionado but loved the imaginative employed between the covers, greatly enhanced with whimsical illustrations. Quite enjoyable perhaps because the under-girding of truth made its self both visible and viable. Glad to discover this Portland, Oregon-based author and waiting for more!

A book almost as remarkable as some of the people whose stories' it tells
By Shalom Freedman
In this book C.P. Snow writes portraits, or 'intellectual biographies' of Rutherford, the mathematician G. H. Hardy, H.G. Wells, Einstein, Lloyd George, Winston Churchill, Robert Frost,Dag Hammarskjold, Stalin. The essays are given a special perspective by the fact that Snow knew personally many of his subjects.

The most fascinating are those on Rutherford, Hardy, and Einstein. The essays are informed by Snow's great intelligence and considerable descriptive powers. Above all they are made such compelling reading because of Snow's knowledge of human character.

In this essay on one of the great master- physicists of all time Rutherford who worked during the Golden Age of Physics Snow writes of scientists and scientific work in a general.

" Nevertheless it is true that , of all the kinds of people I have lived among, the scientists were much the happiest.Somehow scientists were buoyant at a time when other intellectuals could not keep away from despair. The reasons for this are not simple. Partly, the nature of scientific activity , its complete success on its own terms,is itself a source of happiness; partly, people , who are drawn to scientific activity tend to be happier intemperament, the scientists did not think constantly of the human predicament.Since they could not alter it, they let it alone. When they thought about people, they thought most of what could be altered not what couldn't. So they gave their minds to the individual condition not to the social one."

This description would seem to apply the essay on the most venerated of all Scientists of the age, Einstein. Snow describes a day long conversation with Einstein and gives a general overall impression of the man that has insights I have not seen elsewhere. Snow speaks of the surprising physical strength of Einstein, but more importantly of Einstein's political wisdom and courage. Snow sees him as having done yeoman work for Mankind after becoming a legend in his own lifetime.. He shows how Einstein while deploring all physical violence, nonetheless had the sense to support the Allied War effort. He shows how Einstein despite his deploring all nationalism supported the Zionist effort because of his sympathy for poor, outcast, suffering Jews of Europe. He shows how the solitary and lonely Einstein nonetheless truly felt and lived by the thought ' that if we do not live for others we do not live.'

He shows too the undaunting courage and persistence of Einstein as scientist. In this he finds a comparison between the 'unbudgeable' character of Einstein and that of Churchill. Both persisted in their goals for Einstein the exploration of the Nature of Physical Reality, and pushed all aside to do this. Snow of course tells the story of the wonder year of 1905 and Einstein's three - revolutionary papers. He also tells once again the story of Einstein's weathering the great crisis of the divorce and separation from his two sons, and persisting in the thinking that resulted in the General Theory of Relativity. (1915)

In another of the better essays on the mathematician G. H. Hardy Snow tells of how Hardy's obsession with cricket constituted a good part of their conversations. He tells of Hardy's great collaborations with Littlewood. And he tells the remarkable story of Ramanujan the self- taught Indian mathematician who as a storekeeper sent pages of his work to Hardy who understood that he was dealing with a native mathematical genius on order of Gauss or Euler. Ramanujan came to England and worked at Cambridge but unfortunately died young.

This is the way Snow describes their last meeting.

" Hardy used to visit him, as he lay dying in a hospital at Putney. It was on one of those visits that there happened the incident of the taxi- cab number. Hardy had gone out to Putney by taxi, as usual his chosen method of conveyance. He went into the room where Ramanujan was lying. Hardy, always inept about introducing a conversation, said, probably without a greeting , and certainly as his first remark. 'The number of my taxi- cab was 1729. It seemed to me rather a dull number'. To which

Ramanujan replied: 'No.Hardy! It is a very interesting number. It is the smallest number expressible as the sum of two cubes in two different ways.'

A book almost as remarkable as some of the people whose stories it tells.

Personal impressions on these great lives from one who knew them
By Nova137
Review of "Variety of Men" by C.P. Snow. Copyright 1966, 1967 C.P. Snow

"The chapters on Lloyd George and G. H. Hardy appeared first in *The Atlantic Monthly,* the chapter on Einstein in *Commentary,* and the chapter on Stalin in *Esquire*."

This quote let's us know this is a collection of original essays. Yet, they aren't essays, they are the author's "personal impressions" left-over from actual encounters (job interviews, private conversations, committee meetings) of the author with the subject. The subjects of interest are:

Rutherford 3
G.H. Hardy 21
H.G. Wells 63
Einstein 87
Lloyd George 123
Winston Churchill 149
Robert Frost 173
Dag Hammarskjold 201
Stalin 225

The author's Preface is just delightful. So personable. It is the author's own inner dialogue come to life. He explains that he believes he is being honest in these personal impressions. And, he wants his words to be taken, "no more than that". He "met them all except for Stalin," but also studied them and the "standard works about them (and, in some cases, the works less well known) as carefully as I can." He wants us to know that when he "reports remarks in direct speech, I believe that my memory is accurate, and that they were said in those words, or in words closely similar."

The honesty he vouchsafes comes with a warning. "These remarks which stuck in my memory, and which I can vouch for, were usually said in the course of prolonged conversations. The rest has gone, or left only a general impression of its sense. By abstracting the words which most impressed or amused me, I may sometimes without intending to have introduced an emphasis of my own. I don't think I have, but I ought to give the warning."

One of the things that stands out in this work is how the author compares and contrasts the geniuses he writes about. Here are some samples that show how he is able to tell us about Hardy directly or by contrasting him with Einstein and Rutherford:

"His mind, as I have just mentioned, was brilliant and concentrated: so much so that by his side anyone else's seemed a little muddy, a little pedestrian and confused. He wasn't a great genius, as Einstein and Rutherford were."

"There is something else, though, at which he was clearly superior to Einstein or Rutherford or any other great genius: and that is at turning any work of the intellect, major or minor or sheer play, into a work of art."

"Much of his childhood, unlike Einstein's, was typical of a future mathematician's. He was demonstrating a formidably high I.Q. as soon as, or before, he learned to talk."

"Nevertheless, he had to live with an over-delicate nature. He seems to have been born with three skins too few. Unlike Einstein, who had to subjugate his powerful ego in the study of the external world before he could attain his moral stature, Hardy had to strengthen an ego which wasn't much protected. This at times in later life made him self-assertive (as Einstein never was) when he had to take a moral stand. On the other hand, it gave him his introspective insight and beautiful candor, so that he could speak of himself with absolute simplicity (as Einstein never could)."

Or, here, on pages 27 and 28 comparing him again to Einstein and then to the educational well-fare that a country takes for its geniuses:

"He was a classical anti-narcissist. He could not endure having his photograph taken: so far as I know, there are not half-a-dozen photographs in existence. He would not have any looking-glass in his rooms, not even a shaving mirror...this would have been odd enough, if his face had been like a gargoyle: superficially it might seem odder, since all his life he was good-looking quite out of the ordinary. But, of course, narcissism and anti-narcissism have nothing to do with looks as outside observers see them.

"This behavior seems eccentric, and indeed it was. Between him and Einstein, though, there was a difference in kind. Those who spent much time with Einstein--such as Infeld--found him grow stranger, less like themselves, the longer they knew him. I am certain that I should have felt the same. With Hardy the opposite was true. His behavior was often different, bizarrely so, from ours: but it came to seem a kind of superstructure set upon a nature which wasn't all that different from our own, except that it was more delicate, less padded, finer-nerved."

"His family had no money, only a schoolmaster's income, but they were in touch with the best education advice of late nineteenth century England. That particular kind of information has always been more significant in this country than any amount of wealth. The scholarships have been there all right, if one knew how to win them. There was never the slightest chance of the young Hardy being lost--as there was of the young Wells or the young Einstein. From the age of twelve, he had only to survive, and his talents would be looked after."

I hope this taste of Mr. Snow's insights into these remarkable men has sparked enough of an interest in you to make a purchase today.

Zwang! The source of Einstein's Creativity
By Herbert L Calhoun
In this series of discussions of remarkable men, I have singled them out each one for separate reviews, simply because to lump them together would do Snow's incredible writing an injustice.

Of all the books I have read about the Olympian genius, Albert Einstein, this, the shortest one, in my estimation is by far also one of the best. The author, was a distinguished British Novelist and physicist who knew Einstein (as well as the other Scientists in this series) as a friend and studied him both as a Scientist, and a human being and also as a friend. The beauty of this portrait and this series, is not only that it is written in British English instead of American English (meaning that it is written so economically precise that you can almost hear a British accent flowing from the page, and that it is free of clutter and unnecessary sentimentality).

But more than this, it is written with such sensitivity and respect for all its subjects that the poignancy alone touches the reader at a very deep level. In addition to being beautifully written, it also answers a host of hitherto unanswered questions about these subjects, including Albert Einstein the man: His feelings about art and literature and creativity in general, for instance. I was neither surprised nor unhappy to discover that his favorite book was "Brothers Karamazov," by my favorite writer, the Existentialist Russian Novelist Fedor Dostoevski.

However, Snow's deepest insight into Einstein's attitude towards creativity comes from a word he had heard that Einstein used since early childhood and throughout his life. The word was "Zwang," which when translated from German, mean roughly "no [societal] constrains." One can easily conclude from this recitation that it was the space that Zwang created that allowed Einstein's creativity to soar so high for so long. Zwang may also go a long way in explaining why the great Scientist also had so much trouble with authority figures throughout his life.

Another matter this article clears up is the role Einstein's theory actually played in the development of the atomic bomb. According to Snow, it played no role at all because suspicions about the ability to harness nuclear fission for purposes of making a weapon were well known and well conceptualized even before Einstein's theoretical formulation of E=MC^2. Thus after the fission experiments by Lisa Mietner and Otto Hahn, it would have been empirically apparent that a bomb could be made even without Einstein's famous equation.

A similar confusion is cleared up in this series about the warning letter sent to Roosevelt that was signed by Einstein about the possibility of building a fission bomb. Einstein was more a convenient conduit than an instigator of the letter. Although he certainly was as concerned as the others that Hitler might get the bomb first, the initiative for that letter lay in the hands of Szliard, Wigner, Teller, and Fermi.

For a quick, elegant read about everybody's favorite set of scientists, one cannot do better than this. Five Stars

A Great Book for the Times We're In
By Candace Freeland
There's a high frequency of loving awareness coming through this book.

I finished reading it yesterday afternoon and my inner tuning forks were set a vibratin'. I had been noticing a particularly stringent round of discouragement and depression playing out in my mental/emotional field in the past few days. So this morning, I sat with the book again and the guidance on pages 139-153 really came home in a way that was visceral and effective.

The author expresses universal principles that I have been using from Buddhism and Advaita for years - in a way that synergizes the teachings of both, simply, clearly and practically.

The consciousness practices are accessible, loving, kind, simple, humble, doable.

May "The Sovereignty of Love" be of benefit to many and All, far and wide.
