About the Author

Professor Thomas Ihn took his PhD in Physics in 1994 at TU Munich, Germany, then did post-doctoral work at the School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Nottingham. He began work as a Research Assistant at the Solid State Physics Laboratory, ETH Zurich, in 1998, and is now Professor of Physics there.

About the Author

S. Yizhar was the pen name of Yizhar Smilansky, born in Rehovot in 1916. A longtime member of the Knesset, he is most famous as the author of Khirbet Khizeh and the untranslated magnum opus Days of Ziklag. He died in 2006. Nicholas de Lange, a professor emeritus of Hebrew and Jewish studies at Cambridge University, has translated many Hebrew novels, including Preliminaries by S. Yizhar (2007). Yaacob Dweck translated Haim Sabato's The Dawning of the Day (2006). He is an assistant professor of history and Judaic studies at Princeton University. David Shulman teaches Sanskrit and other Indian languages at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has published numerous books and is the author of Dark Hope: Working for Peace in Israel and Palestine (2007). Shulman was named a MacArthur Fellow in 1987.

A transcendent argument, ethics of warfare

The story of the exile of the Palestinians from their lands in the first of Israel's wars - a process that is ongoing - and a portrayal of ongoing human indifference to the plight of others continues to resonate. It's unfortunate that all the extraordinary flexibility of English cannot duplicate the power of the original Hebrew; its allusions to biblical texts are barely shadowed in translation. When Moshe and Shlomo - Moses and Saul - begin to argue, readers get some hint of what may be going on in the original language - an argument that transcends time, tradition, the particular circumstances of a single - and singular - war.

A universal condemnation of those who exile

On the surface, this is a small event: Israeli soldiers in 1948 empty an Arab village without death or injury. By some standards, this could be called humane or benign as the soldiers didn't display sadistic behavior or take liberties with the residents. But only on paper; from the first page the tone of this piece reflects the humiliation, desperation and shock of the displaced residents as well as the sickening sense of moral compromise and death.

The prose has been described as meandering, but I found it lyrical and hypnotic. I agree, however, that the narrator was using it in part to mislead the reader and in part to distract himself, almost as if he was trying to distract himself from the memory of his participation in brutality.

There were several passages that stood out for me. At one point they come upon a village elder. The soldiers come with such hostility and anger left over from the Holocaust, but the people they encounter do not, by any measure, merit that. They try to treat the soldiers with respect, but they are instead spoken to as if they were animals who are irritating them because they aren't following order. The soldiers, annoyed by having to be there, don't respect the residents they're displacing at all. The fact that they don't rise up against them (the soldiers are far outnumbered) confirms their feeling that these people are inferior. And yet, when they come across a beautiful horse, one of them played with it as if were a treasured child.

The narrator is tortured by the reactions of every person he runs into, but it's the defiant child he sees at the end who forces him to realize that what he and his comrades are doing is inflicting exile. This is what he can't live with- it's clear that he signed on to protect, not destroy- but he is also powerless to stop it (or walk away).

It wasn't clear until the end when this book was supposed to take place. Further, while the village and historical details were referenced a few times, in many ways this could have been a story about soldiers and exile anywhere. In other words, while this was a condemnation of Israel's actions at the beginning of their history, it's also a universal condemnation of war.

Wonderful, comprehensive book!

I have used this book with both of my pregnancies and I love it! Last pregnancy I did some of the exercises from about five months up to a couple of weeks before my daughter was born. This pregnancy I started working through the entire book at about seven weeks. I'm going on five months now and it has been great! It takes me about an hour to complete. However, I skip the relaxation section as it doesn't seem to me to belong in the middle of a workout. There are three levels of intensity so it's easy to find one that's comfortable for you. I'm also very uncoordinated even when not pregnant but I found this book easy to follow. I feel very fit and have noticed increased muscle tone over most of my body. I highly recommend this program!

A well planned workout.

When I found out I was pregnant I was at a loss as to how I was going to maintain my fitness as I used to do kick-boxing and Tae Bo three to four times times a week! Obviously that wasn't suitable so I bought this book to help me structure a challenging workout. It begins with warm-ups and mobility stretches before the aerobic exercises which can be done at various levels to suit everyone. Then follows strengthening and toning before the final streches (including those dreaded pelvic floor exercises) and relaxation. Altogether it is a good workout that you can vary according to your energy levels and mood. The reason I gave it four stars instead of five is that the complete routine takes a lot longer than the hour stated but there are shorter routines to compensate. I feel great anyway and I don't feel that my fitness has decreased at all since I got pregnant!!!

Modesty Blaise's good friend John Dall can't understand why Modesty insists on risking her life to try to save the life of a person with an incurable and debilitating mental problem. "You really think he's better off alive?" he asks Modesty.

"I wouldn't know, Johnnie. I don't know what it's like to be dead," replies Modesty.

That's good enough for me. :-)

"I, Lucifer" (1967) is the third book in the Modesty Blaise series of action thrillers written by Peter O'Donnell back in the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's. This is a series of books that I really love, and you may wish to take a look at my "So You'd Like To" guide here at Amazon.com about reading books by Peter O'Donnell.

Although I love this series of books I've decided to only give four stars to "I, Lucifer". The reason is that the supernatural plays a very important role in the story, and I'm too much of a skeptic to believe in such things. In addition, a major coincidence occurs that also reduces the believability of the plot in my mind.

The bad guys are always a major element in a Modesty Blaise story. In "I, Lucifer" we meet Seff and his wife Regina, two elderly puppeteers who turned to crime when they could no longer find work due to the closure of the vaudeville theaters. Unlikely villains, but they are described as being so evil that one feels a chill running down one's back.

Seff and his wife have developed a diabolical way of threatening people and demanding protection money. But they happened to have René Vaubois (a friend of Modesty Blaise and Willie Garvin) on their list of targets, and he refused to pay when threatened. And René happens to be together with Modesty and Willie when a gang tries to kill him, to set an example for the other targets.

This is the start of a long and complicated story. First Modesty and Willie have to find the bad guys, then they suffer a major setback, and then we are led to the exciting final confrontation.

The high point in this book, in my opinion, is when Modesty and Willie are forced to fight a duel to the death against each other. Of course, I can't reveal what happens, but as usual Peter O'Donnell has created a story with many twists and surprises. And, as usual, the very special relationship between Modesty and Willie is an important and appealing part of the book.

This book introduces Stephen Collier, a recurring figure in several of the later Modesty Blaise books. I have mixed feelings about Stephen Collier, and am never really sure about what it is that Modesty sees in him.

One final point I'll mention is that the paperback edition of this book contains a couple of typographical errors not present in the original hardcover edition. Amazing as it sounds in our post-PC era, the text of books must have been manually re-entered back then when a book was copied from hardcover to paperback.

In conclusion, a great Modesty Blaise adventure, but not one of my favorites because of the emphasis on a certain supernatural ability of one of the characters in the story.

Nobody does it better!

I'm a long-time big-time fan of the Modesty Blaise books. O'Donnell does a nifty job of combining action/adventure with humor and drama. This title is my sentimental favorite probably because this is the one in which the recurring character of sharp-witted, self-professed coward Stephen Collier is introduced. Collier is the Everyman we can identify with, who allows us as readers to partake of the action and observe Modesty and sidekick Willie Garvin's antics without pretending in any way to be their peer. Like Collier the reader is a passenger on this wild caper - you may hold your breath at times and burst out laughing at others. This book has all the hallmarks of a Blaise/Garvin outing: Ingenious villains, a Garvin girl story, wit, wonderfully detailed combat sequences -- if you've never read a Modesty Blaise book, no need to begin at the beginning because this book easily stands on its own and is thrilling enough to induce you to read the others.

Best of a good series

I loved the Modesty Blaise tales when they came out in the Sixties and seventies. All were good. I loved the interaction between Modesty and Willie. (By the way, anyone else notice the similarities with Skilly and Two-knife in Jerry Pournelle's stories of Falkenberg's Legion?) The other characters, including Modesty's and Garvin's love interests, were also interesting and well drawn, (although some of Willie's girls were a bit over the top). I Lucifer has one of the more interesting plots; a young man who can predict death with almost 90% accuracy, and thinks he is Satan, and the villains who take control of him for monetary gain. O'Donnell always had good villains for Modesty and Willie to foil, and this tale takes all their wits and skills. A good action spy-thriller with a horror/occult twist...

A great book by a very good man

If you want a worms eye view of the grim reality of the WWII Italian campaign then here you go. Bill Mauldin is one of my all time favorite Writers and more importantly Cartoonist. This gritty, humorous book about one of Americas toughest campaigns is one of the best books I have ever read. His story about Patton is worth the price of the book alone. But there is so much more and I don't want to give it away. I can not recommend this book too highly !

The real war

Witty, grim, ironic - Bill Mauldin's "The Brass Ring" is a look at the reality of World War II by a guy who was there. If the men and women in the war were "just doing their job", as many say, then why do so many of us respect them so much? Mauldin's own story does as good a job, I suppose, as any man can do in trying to answer this unanswerable question.

A Good Read

This book can serve a multitude of uses to a multitude of readers: A "sort of" history of WWII; the story of how a young man from humble and poor beginings won a pulitzer prize for editorial cartooning, how an aspiring cartoonist gained national recognition and how other aspiring cartoonists may go about becoming recognized themselves. Highly entertaining with one of the most humorous and climactic endings I have ever had the pleasure to read.

Very Good Book!

The author did a great job of keeping this book simple and explaining things very well.

Topics covered:

Left Hand Bass Lines including Jerry Lee, Little Richard, Fats Domino, and Chuck Berry styles.

Right Hand - Eighths, Glissando, Crushed Notes (I think this is also called slip notes), Rolls, Note Clusters, and Comping.

Soloing - Blues Scale, How to Construct A Solo, Harmonizing in Thirds and Sixths, Intros, Outros and Stop Choruses.

Lastly there are six tunes with four different versions of each -first a slow demo, slow demo with full band backing, regular speed demo and regular speed with full band backing. The six tunes are -

Buddy Brilliant - In the style of Buddy Holly, this tune is more for learning how to play with a band.

Raspberry Valley - In the styly of Fats Domino, this tune is very close to Blueberry Hill.

A Summer Hideaway - slow song based on 50's ballads like Earth Angel, Blue Moon and Young Love.

Boogie Woogie Wonderland - good song to practice your boogie woogie bass lines.

Rick's Rock - in the style of Little Richard

Roll Over Jerry - in the style of Jerry Lee Lewis, this song is very close to Great Balls of fire.

The cd is very well done with lots of slow examples and lots of examples with full band backing.

This is a very quality product and I think the author did a great job of breaking this information down and giving us the basics.

I also own the excellent 'David David Bennett Cohen Teaches Rock'n'Roll Piano'. If you're debating on which of these to buy I would say that this one breaks down the basics a little better while Cohen's is a real wealth of knowledge that is going to take sometime to go through (contains lots of great solos). Also Cohen's cd is narrated while this cd contains only has the music examples.

Good musical examples, mediocre explanations

The actual instruction and explanation in this book is a little weak, although there's not a lot of instruction material for this topic, so it's not like there's a clearly better alternative. The musical examples, especially the complete songs at the end, are all top notch, though. And while somewhat superfluous, the little bit of rock'n'roll history at the beginning was interesting and helped me connect a few dots I hadn't previously.

One thing to note, however, is that I was rather irritated by the way the author kind of assumes that the reader is a talentless hack with no interest taking music seriously or practicing. His suggestions for how you dress or how on-stage antics can compesate for a lack of ability were just uncalled for. Just because I have an interest in Rock'n'Roll piano doesn't mean I'm not a serious musician! I wouldn't have minded so much if it hadn't felt like they skimped on the actual instruction to make page-space for that garbage.

The bottom line, though, is given what's available on this topic, the musical examples and accompanying CD are well worth the money. If you don't feel you need tips on wearing sequins or kicking the piano stool, you can probably safely skip the text, though.

Good As A Companion Volume

If you truly are looking to play Rock'N'Roll piano DON'T GET THIS BOOK...first.

First, devour Mark Harrison's Blues Piano, from the same Hal Leonard series. Rock'N'Roll piano obviously has its origins in the Blues, and Harrison's book is COMPREHENSIVE. It has a plethora of examples of left hand patterns, comping styles, and right hand techniques--all pertaining to the various styles within the blues genre, and even Rock'N'Roll.

Next, get Vinter's Rock'N'Roll Piano. It's helpful, but primarily as a companion volume.

A God sent to me so far!

I came to Dana Rayburn's book through her blog, which has great practical easy to apply advice from someone who really knows what it is like to have ADD. I don't know Dana, but out of desperation was searching online for help and I came across a link to her book from her website. I love this book for many reasons 1) She writes in a way that keeps the attention of a busy adult with ADD 2) The book is easy to follow and very practical 3) It is easy to reference. For the first time in a long time, I am hopeful that I can create a peaceful, meaningful, productive life. The ADD is not going away.. but with Dana's book I believe I can begin to realize more of my potential.

Buy this, not the ebook version!!!!'m

The content is great and very helpful....I just wish I knew there was a paperback version before I spent $25 on the ebook version!!! I don't know why they don't let people know there are two versions. I HATE ebooks, but I liked the content of Dana's book so much, I thought I could get it printed out at an office store (yeah, right....I'll put that on my to-do list!!). I really don't want to spend another $25 ....so bummed I didn't know about this paperback version first!

Real help for the chronically disorganised

I found the ideas in this book very helpful and sustainable over the long term. I have read many books in my attempts to get organized and implemented all sorts of systems. The difference with this book is that it doesn't just help with starting an organizing system but helps you in maintaining the system over time.
