"The New Lady in Waiting" reexamines the transferable concepts which have been so helpful and encouraging to over a million women in the original edition of Lady in Waiting. This is an important book for readers today faced with the challenges of a changed and changing culture at a time when core Christian values are being challenged by public opinion and influenced by Reality TV entertainment and Social Media.

The focus on finding fulfillment for the longing of the heart through a relationship with Jesus continues to be the focus of the book. Lessons are taken from the example Ruth in the Old Testament. I absolutely loved the way she described her engagement as well as ...

I have been privileged to read Lady in Waiting by Jackie Kendall. Wow - I originally got this book to talk about these important concepts with my daughter as she begins to enter middle school and begins to focus on boys, looks, etc. I wanted to help her keep her focus where it should be - on God first and foremost.

I absolutely loved the way she described her engagement as well as her wedding. I was challenged that even though our engagement and wedding didn’t take on that form, I can look for and pray, asking God to give me opportunities like that in my daily life as well.

However, I ended up getting much more out of this book than just a learning tool for her. I realized that I have never found my completeness in God and instead used to look for it in “getting married, my children,” Etc. I realized that even though I’m happily married to my husband for over 15 years and I may have squandered my single years (got married later in life) instead of using them wholeheartedly to serve God (something I hope to teach my daughter differently), that cycle can end here. My husband supports my relationship with God as He himself has a strong relationship with our Father. I realize that the more time and effort I put into cultivating the relationship I have with my Father, the healthier I will be as a wife, a mother, and a person in general. I can break the cycle I have perpetuated starting now (one thing I love about God is it is NEVER too late to be restored and healed) and it will only enhance my marriage, my parenting, my life in general. And it’s exciting to me.

I highly recommend this book to single women, starting at a young age as she handles the tougher subjects delicately, and it’s great for married women as well to remind them who they need to be complete in - not their husbands, careers, or children. Only when we immerse ourselves wholeheartedly in our relationship with God will be truly feel complete. I have been growing in my relationship with Him for years now, but the great thing about all relationships is you can never stop digging deeper until you take your last breath - there is always something new, exciting to learn about each other.

Be the right woman first

This book is aimed at female singles who are not in a dating relationship and is helpful for widows, teens and married women as well. The author suggests you put your relationship with God first, before seeking a spouse, and that the best way to find comfort is to open God’s word. She guides the reader to become the right woman first, rather than to have the priority of seeking the right man.

From gold rush saloons in San Francisco to last calls in lower Manhattan, Thomas collected material for The Bartender's Guide, the seminal 1862 collection of cocktail recipes. Wondrich offers up 100 classic cocktails from Thomas's guide and other period sources, along with 16 new drinks that recall those golden days. Old-time tools, ingredients and measurements are conveniently converted to their contemporary equivalents, as julep strainers and toddy sticks are hard to come by. Fortunately, many of the concoctions transcend time in their simplicity. General Harrison's Egg Nogg, for example, calls for hard cider, sugar, an egg and some lumps of ice. About the Author
David Wondrich is one of the world’s foremost authorities on cocktails and their history. A contributing editor at Esquire and at Wine and Spirits, he has also written for numerous other publications on the subject, including the New York Times, Saveur, Real Simple, and Drinks. Dr. Wondrich holds a Ph.D. in comparative literature, and is a founding member of The Museum of the American Cocktail and a partner in Beverage Alcohol Resource, the world’s first advanced education program in spirits and cocktails. He lives in Brooklyn, New York, with his wifeand daughter.

Nobody Does it Better

Imbibe is the best book ever written on the subject of cocktails and mixed drinks. Plain and simple. Best Ever.

Not only does Wondrich dispel lots of myths about Jerry Thomas, and many, many cocktails--the birth of the Sazerac, for instance--he does it with such wit, turning phrase after phrase in the manner of a master wordsmith. It's a bloody delightful read.

Buy this book for yourself, and buy this book for anyone and everyone you know. Even if they have no interest in the main subject matter--and what are you doing hanging out with people like that, anyway?--if any of your friends has the slightest interest in American social history they will be absolutely spellbound as they travel back in time with Dave and watch illustrious quaffers of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries doing what they did best: Imbibing.

Wondrich also translates recipes from Thomas' books, and from other books of the same period. He takes them to pieces, examines them thoroughly, and puts them back together so that we can sip a taste of the past. Our copy of the book is already splashed with bitters . . .

Required Reading for any Cocktailian

The cocktail has had a glorious 200 year history, much of which unfortunately has gone unheralded for far too long. Thankfully, one of the most diligent cocktail historians of today's milieu has taken it upon himself to rectify this problem.

Using the illustrious "Jerry Thomas" (famous bartender from the mid 1800's and author of the first known bartenders guide) as a focal point, Mr. Wondrich introduces us to the birth and evolution of the cocktail as well as a variety of other categories of "mixed drinks" from that era. With insightful, and often witty explanations he steps carefully through both the drinks and the attitudes of the time which formed the foundation for all that was to follow.

Cocktail recipe books, which cram as many recipes as possible within their pages, are a dime a dozen. To truly understand the cocktail, whether you are a bartender or bar-attender, requires that you have a grasp of the history which preceded our current landscape. For this reason, this book is perhaps the most important book of its kind, and fills a huge void which has surrounded this topic for virtually its entire history.

"A cat can gaze upon a king..."

"...and after a Dry Martini or a Sazerac Cocktail or two, we're all cats." This beautiful, marvelous book is the best book I've read this year. It is part biography, part history and part mixology. If you enjoy the odd cocktail or two, you owe a measure of thanks to Jerry Thomas, the "professor". In the latter half of the 19th century, Jerry (now that I feel like I know the man) perfected and prodded forward the development of the cocktail. His life was interesting and productive. The book gives you many examples from his book (subtitled "the Bon-Vivant's Guide") with modern translations of the recipes. I have been experimenting with the recipes myself and have had one or two , um, slow mornings. Well worth it, however. Get the book for the history and enjoy it with a nice Saratoga Cocktail, or perhaps the "Tombstone". Just leave the vodka in the cabinet...forever.

This is a GREAT real estate investment book

What I find so helpful about this book, and I have read a lot of them, is the logical way in which the authors divide all aspects of real estate investing. They have experience, they have the data, and they present it so well. I have been investing for a few years, and this book not only sums up much of what I have learned, but it really has taught me things I didn't know. It has made me think about my business in a smarter way. They don't promote a get-rich-quick scheme. This is hard work. They present the business in an honest way.

'Enough said'

If you look at the authors' bio, it's short and sweet. What it says is, I know what I'm doing because I've done this before. The steps are laid out in this book: (1) Finding a home with potential (2) How to make an offer without costing you an arm and a leg (3) how to finance (4) How to fix your house and manage it (5) How to sell. These 5 simple steps are delivered to the point, and with expertise.

Just one last point, I only recommend reading books by investors. Don't buy books from 'writers'. They don't write from an investor's perspective. Other books I recommend along with FLIP:

A DEFINITE READ for Investors and Professional Real Estate Consultants

As a Certified Residential Specialist from Fayetteville, North Carolina, I am constantly exposing myself to every kind of training and am constantly reading about the real estate industry so I may be best prepared to serve my clients. I have been watching for this book for weeks and was so excited when I finally found it. WOW! I couldn't put it down.

This is such a well written, practical and informative resource on the processes of flipping. It could easily be named - FLIP- THE REALITY CHECK. There is certainly a method that makes the process of rehabing and reselling a home a financial success. This book really educates the layperson about the importance of making buying decisions based on information gathered through predetermined systems and processes rather than on emotion. Valuable!

FLIP also clearly communicates the power of good advocacy which I hugely appreciated and agree with. I see some people who discount the enormous value that Realtors and other professionals bring to the success of real estate processes. This writer GETS IT!

From A-Z, this is a grand guide. Through the use of personal stories it is easy to "feel" the temptations to make rush decisions not solidly based on factual evaluation and profit projections and, through the stories the reader could get a little taste of the frustrations, fears and celebrations that are part of the challenge. The stories make it clear that stuff just happens and there is no perfect purchase that yields only great returns with no surprises. That prepares the reader to know it's just a part of the ride and there is not an unreasonable expectation that their attempts have to be perfect all the time. Looking at multiple investor stories, the reader also learns that there's more than one way to hit a home run. The "Lessons Learned" and the "Successes Celebrated" are both parts of the Real Estate adventure I love and they were well portrayed.

I was most appreciative of the generous sharing of forms already prepared which I will use in assisting clients evalutate personal purchases and also use for my own personal investments. I'm ready to Flip one for Donna!

I just had a consultation this afternoon with an investor client and felt I was able to perform at a caliber that was way above what I would have known just days ago. He left with his homework- one of the first steps of which was to buy and read FLIP. We are both going to be informed and well prepared and successful! What a team we will be!

West, Wendy Wasserstein, Caryl Churchill, Paula Vogel, and Suzan-Lori Parks.

This volume offers a comprehensive overview of women's playwriting, as well as a celebration of the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. It combines critical essays, playwrights' memoirs, and conversations and interviews with playwrights to explore how women's playwriting evolved in relation to the women's movement and how it continues to map new territory and find fresh modes of expression. A fascinating history of handwriting teaching in our schools

Most of this book seems to be written from the typical university left-wing point of view, in which handwriting practice in years gone by was just a way of making conforming "assembly line" citizens for capitalists.

But at the end of the book, Professor Thornton seems to realize that the pendulum has swung too far, and that today's pampered youth could use a bit of discipline in school.

I only hope she will soon realizing that fluent handwriting is a key to literacy and to education reform, which is now apparent from so many on-line articles.

Such a comprehensive history of handwriting, so well researched and a joy to read. I would recommend this to anyone interested in cultural or social history.

Handwriting in America: A Cultural History

An interesting book, but it should have been titled "The Teaching of Handwriting in America". Also, it missed a kind of writing which I can't name, but know when I see it - for example, something like "California" on California auto license tags. It was taught in America, and it was the model in England for many years - a Life magazine article around 1950 showed such examples from the winners in an English schoolboy competition. (My father learned this style in a preparatory school in the South in the early 1900s, and one of our daughters-in-law was taught the same way.)
One reviewer adversely criticized this book for harping on, perhaps even imagining, sexism in the early teaching of handwriting, and I don't think the comment was deserved - I believe the author was accurately describing what was actually taught, and gave it no more space than is warranted.
