About the Author
1985 was a good year. Jane Lewis finished an internship in the Questioned Document section of the Secret Service Lab in Washington, DC. She graduated with a Master of Forensic Sciences degree from George Washington University and got a job as a document analyst with the FBI in the Hoover Building in Washington DC. She soon moved up the mall to the Secret Service Lab. But the lure of beer and bratwurst was too strong and Jane found herself back home at the Wisconsin State Crime Lab in Milwaukee. Twenty-three years later Jane retired from the Milwaukee Lab and moved on to greener pastures working in private practice in Milwaukee.
She is certified by the American Board of Forensic Document Examiners. Jane is a member of the American Society of Questioned Document Examiners (ASQDE), Assistant Editor of the Journal of the American Society of Questioned Document Examiners, a Director representing the Questioned Document Section of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS), a fellow in the Questioned Document Section of AAFS and a member of the Midwestern Association of Forensic Scientists (MAFS).
Jane has testified more than 50 times as a forensic document examiner. She has presented her research at the annual scientific sessions of AAFS, ASQDE and MAFS. Her research has been published in the Journal of Forensic Sciences and the Journal of the American Society of Questioned Document Examiners. Jane along with three colleagues wrote a chapter on Forensic document examination in the book Forensic Science Current Issues, Future Directions, edited by Douglas H. Ubelaker, published in 2013.

About the Author
Wyatt Preul works as a software test engineer for Telligent Systems. Wyatt is the author of the Wrox book Professional Community Server. Wyatt has been working with and admiring Community Server shortly after version 1.1 was released. Since that time he has become a respected member of the community and active participant in the product itself. Wyatt now spends his days happily developing features for Community Server and trying to locate bugs in the product, to which he reports there aren't many. A Narrative about a website, not an instructional volume about a framework

This is a very difficult read. I'm not a beginner... with JavaScript or programming. I decided to buy this book because the hapi website is very lean on helpful information for common use patterns, and the api docs, which don't have any accompanying code examples with them. This is what makes what could be a simple, fun, happy, and joyous bit of software, difficult to work with.

The book fares no better. It writes several pages of code, and you're well into chapter 3, before any of the authors mention the name of the file you're saving the following bit of code in. I don't know how anyone would be expected to follow along on their own. The only way to do so, is to have the github repo side-by-side, and find the file with the code being referenced.

Honestly, the book feels more like a dictation of how hapi-plugins.com was built, and feels very little like a book on hapi. What I mean to say is, instead of saying "let's write a book about hapi", and then developing a subject to fit the different concepts you need to convey, it feels like the authors decided to write a narrative about the server side code of a website after they had built it.

Great Hapi Resource

Developing a hapi Edge is written by several of the maintainers of the Hapi ecosystem. This book goes into great detail about everything from scaffolding to writing and running tests. This book will help you get started quickly with Hapi, from where the tutorials online leave off. The best part is that it's fairly current (considering Hapi has had several major version releases coinciding with the IO.js + Joyent merger => Node v4.x => Node 5.x), and covers approaches that work with the current version of Hapi.

I've worked with several of the authors, so I'm a little biased, but I would recommend this book to both beginners and those familiar with Hapi alike. It's a great primer, but it goes into depth on several of the core modules, as well as ancillary libraries, and it gives great examples of patterns to use, as well as recommendations for production environments.

The detractor of this book is the fact that it's written by several distinct authors, and therefore it can sometimes be difficult to follow the thought processes from chapter to chapter.

Comprehensive Intro to hapi

Before coming across this book, I went through a hapi api tutorial and didn't quite understand what made hapi different from other frameworks like express. This book gives a great overview of what hapi has to offer, the ins and outs, and tools/plugins/libraries available. The book and examples are easy to follow even for someone relatively new to nodejs. Writing tests is usually my least favorite thing to do, but after reading the debugging and testing sections I'm actually looking forward to writing tests for my future hapi projects. The kindle ebook format is very limiting especially for reading purposes. I know it does not have anything to do with the book which is good but kindle DRMs are a serious restraint especially when it comes to notes and annotations.

Vijay Govindarajan is the Earl C. Daum 1924 Professor of International Business and founding director of the Tuck School's Center for Global Leadership. He has worked with dozens of Fortune 500 corporations and speaks at conferences around the world. He lives in New Hampshire.

Chris Trimble has dedicated more than ten years to studying a single challenge that vexes even the best-managed corporations: how to execute an innovation initiative. With Govindarajan he coauthored the New York Times bestseller Reverse Innovation (2012). He lives in Vermont.

Just fine as the lighter version of "The Other Side of Innovation"

This book uses storytelling in the form of a fable to teach a limited number of lessons and / or principles about how to make innovation happen. While it is true that one of the biggest challenges involved in making innovation happen is realizing when to engage in such an undertaking and pull the trigger in the first place, this book is focused primarily on helping readers cope with various challenges arising from the "execution" portion of making innovation happen, and less so on processes and tasks occuring beforehand, such as how to generate ideas, evaluate them for innovativeness, feasibility, and other attributes, and then select one or more of them for implementation.

The lessons that the authors hope the readers of this book would remember revolve around what kind of help should be given to the point person tasked with planning and rolling out the new products and / or services, and how that person's performance should be evaluated. The authors also provide advice on team building and conflict resolution.

This book is a quick read, and is intended to be a lighter version of the authors' longer, more traditional, and more comprehensive book entitled: "The Other Side of Innovation: Solving the Execution Challenge." Both books have their own merits. Go for the more comprehensive book if you need or are interested in the details, but if you don't, this more accessible version should be just fine. I should point out, however, that the more comprehensive book is not that much more difficult to read than this one, so if you prefer to or can only own one of them, go for the more comprehensive book.

A simple tale that teaches big lessons

This story offers incredibly valuable insights into what can help innovation succeed or cause it to fail. In an organization that already had a "performance engine" that is well established and operationally sound, introducing an innovation unit can be perceived as a threat to the integrity and efficiency of the performance engine, rather than be recognized a key to the organization's long-term success and survival. At first you may wonder why Chris Trimble and Vijay Govindarajan, two Tuck professors, chose to write a parable about farm animals rather than a traditional business school textbook to explain their ideas. But just as George Orwell so effectively used the characters and plot in Animal Farm to convey political and social commentary, so too do these authors use the animals on Windsor farm to dramatize just what it takes for innovation to succeed. By using a parable, the authors remove most of the extraneous detail that typically clouds corporate case studies, thereby making the basic principles plainly evident. In addition, the story is designed to prompt discussion among those who have read it to answer the question, "Who saved the farm, and how?" The book is well written, humorous, and easy to read, and undoubtedly each of the animal characters will bring to mind someone you know. This is a must-read for anyone planning on launching an innovation team or program.

Should be required reading!

This is one of the best books I've read in a long time - and I read a lot! It should definitely be required reading for all highschool and college students - at least in the San Francisco Bay Area, if not the entire country.

It is an autobiography of the first black woman to 'make it' in the world of journalism, but it is so much more. It is a fascinating history of the 1950s onward - race relations, Ku Klux Klan in San Francisco, civil rights movements, Black Panthers, Patty Hearst, Jonestown, Dan White murders, Fidel Castro, AIDs, on and on. It includes all the things that were current events for me, but now fall into the category of history, therefore probably history that is not yet taught in schools.

Buy it! Read it! Pass it on to someone younger so they see what it was like not so long ago. It is funny, tragic, enlightening, inspiring and a gift to us all.

An amazing woman's story about overcoming staggering obstacles.

Living in the San Francisco Bay Area, I've watched Belva Davis on local TV for decades. I was a Cal student in the '60s during the early days of the civil rights movement, while Belva covered many of these stories. It's hard to remember how much mis-treatment of African-Americans there was in the "liberal" bay area in those days. Belva's story vividly portrays, in a very personal way, what life was like in those days for those outside of mainstream America. I am amazed that she achieved so much professionally without succumbing to cynicism and bitterness. This book should be required reading in college courses on US history in the post-war years. Watch her on public television, and Read This Book!

Belva Davis has lived an extraordinary life, and she shares the details none of us ever saw on screen in her memoir, Never in My Wildest Dreams: A Black Woman's Life in Journalism. Davis was the first black, female journalist to appear on television on the West Coast. An ambitious, confident woman, she grabbed every story and always delivered. She is considered the "Walter Cronkite of the Bay Area."

As a native of the San Francisco Bay Area, I grew up watching Belva Davis's energetic delivery. Her stories and interviews opened my eyes. After reading Never in My Wildest Dreams, I have a new appreciation for her background and her role as a model for racial equality and feminism.

She begins her memoir with a look back at San Francisco's 1964 Republican Convention, held before the Civil Rights Act became law. Sbe and her news director obtained spectator passes from a black reporter, after the mainstream media refused to give them press passes. They watched from the rafters, determined to report what white reporters might miss.

She writes about growing up in the Oakland projects, where she never had a bedroom and moved from one relative's house to another. With no money for San Francisco State, she took a job tracking ads for a small radio station.

Tiny in size but big in spirit, she accepted every story she was assigned. When CBS affiliate KPIX-TV offered her an on-camera position, she grabbed it. No matter what risk might be involved, she and her cameraman turned in one solid story after another.

She's covered the Vietnam War, the Black Panthers, UC Berkeley, the People's Temple, Mayor Moscone and Harvey Milk. She was an early reporter of the AIDS epidemic, back when it was still called the Gay Cancer. She received eight local Emmys and now hosts a weekly political affairs program on the local PBS station, KQED-TV.

She wrote her memoir, which feels more like an important autobiography, with assistance from Vicki Haddock, a longtime Bay Area journalist who has worked for the San Francisco Chronicle and Examiner as well as the Oakland Tribune. Davis's well-written life story is sometimes tense and dramatic, often determined, and always trustworthy. Never in My Wildest Dreams is an inspiring memoir with a message for all.
