Comprehensive review of MIMO technology - not for the beginner

It is not clear from the book description, but this book is certainly not for the beginner in the field of MIMO. It assumes a strong background in DSP, mathematics, and basic understanding of MIMO. In other words, this is an industry book for experts. The book does a great job of covering the basics of MIMO, delving into the advantages of the encoding technique and its evolution over the years. Common MIMO measurements and challenges are discussed thoroughly, and one seeking additional enlightenment can find a huge index of papers and books to which he can refer for further information.

The authors also discuss very specific implementation challenges in addition to the theory, including 802.11N, LTE, and WiMax.

If you are in the industry and want a single book with just about everything you need to know on today's challenges in WiMax, I highly recommend this book. If you are just curious or new, you might want to look elsewhere.

Written for practitioners, this is a very comprehensive reference guide that aims to addresses the fundamental MIMO architecture in a very reasonable 320 pages. Too often authors (esp. when there are multiple) seem to write like they are paid by the word resulting in excessively elongated chapters. MIMO: From Theory to Implementation doesn't not fall into this trap. The text is clean and easy to read but will be relegated to a very focused audience. The diagrams, acronym guide, index are all top notch and overall the book is recommended for experts in this field.

A Fine Summary

MIMO (multiple input/multiple output) refers to the increasingly commonly used architecture of multiple transmitters and receivers, with multiple antennas, for both local and wide area networks to increase system performance. This book offers a self contained and reasonably complete and coherent summary of the algorithms, standards and protocols employed in the most modern configurations. It will certainly prove very useful to engineers working in the field and will also provide the mathematically more sophisticated reader with the necessary introduction to the terms and techniques employed by current practitioners.

Because the chapters are written by various authors, the book reads more like a compendium of independent papers than a coherent monograph and lacks the consistency that one would have derived from a common author or more aggressive editing. (This is not the Bourbaki series.) Ideally, one would have introduced the topic as a unified combination of information theory, constrained optimisation, geometry and electromagnetic propagation before dealing with the engineering aspects of coding, mulitiplexing and beamforming. However, mathematicians do not write books on such topics and one must accept what is available.

Despite this slight criticism, this text does offer a fine summary of the field and is recommended to those who wish to work in it.

George Walker, Professor of Law, Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary, London,Robert Purves, Partner, 3 Verulam Buildings

Professor George Walker is a Professor in International Financial Law at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies at Queen Mary University of London. He is also a solicitor and consultant to Farrer & Co.

Michael Blair QC has been in self employed practice at the Bar since 2000 and was previously General Counsel to the Board of the Financial Services Authority 1997-2000. He has been a leader among the specialists in the field of financial services since he first joined the Securities and Investments Board as its legal Director in 1987.


Robert Purves is a commercial lawyer at Three Verulam Buildings with strong specialism in financial services law and regulation. From April 2003, Robert was Chief Counsel, Insurance and Prudential Policy at the Financial Services Authority, the UK body responsible for the licensing, oversight and regulation of almost all financial services business in the UK.

His current research interests include a study of the backgrounds, attitudes and roles of members of political parties. Michael Laver holds the chair of Political Science at Trinity College, University of Dublin. He previously taught at Queens University, Belfast, the University of Liverpool, University College Galway and has been a visiting professor at the University of Texas at Austin, Harvard University and Duke University. Recent books include Private Desires, Political Action (London, 1997), Playing Politics: The Nightmare Continues (Oxford, 1997) and (with Kenneth A. Shepsle) Making and Breaking Governments (New York, 1996). He is currently working on the impact of intra party politics on inter party coalition bargaining, and on the development of more dynamic models of government formation. Peter Mair holds the chair of Comparative Politics in Leiden University in the Netherlands and previously taught at the University of Limerick, the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, the University of Manchester, and the European University Institute, Florence. He is the author (with Stefano Bartolini) of Identity, Competition, and Electoral Availability (Cambridge, 1990), which was awarded the Stein Rokkan Prize, and of Party System Change (Oxford, 1997). Recent co-edited books include How Parties Organize (London, 1994), and Partien auf komplexen Wahlermarkten (Vienna, 1999). He is co-editor of the European Journal of Political Research and is currently engaged in a project on the long-term development of elections, parties, and governments in Western Europe over the period from 1950 to 2000.

This is by far the most important book on psychiatry in World War II so far published. The author was, for the major part of the war, Chief Consultant in Neuropsychiatry to the Surgeon General. He describes, with much documentation, the size and characteristics of the task, the errors made, the obstacles encountered and the results achieved. He demonstrates how the lessons learned in World War I were almost completely ignored and forgotten by the Army before World War II. The last part of the book deals with the possible application of lessons learned in the recent War to post-war

Great detailed and comprehensive study on "The Way"

The English version of critical-historical edition of "The Way" by Fr. Pedro Rodriguez is actually not mere a translation of the first Spanish edition (might come from an updated manuscript for a later Spanish edition, as indicated by the author in one of the introductory sections of the book), so it contains a lot of enhancements and improvements from the first edition. The only thing not present in the English edition is analyses concerning the linguistic and textual side of "The Way", which would be best approached from Spanish.

The book is not just a simple overlap of text and commentary. It also gives a very detailed history of the redactions, which also gives the reader an insight to the "literary history" of St. Josemaria Escriva and to the history of Opus Dei as well. It's good to note that a lot of the anecdotes and testimonies in this edition provide some deeper insight into the historical situation already described by Vasquez de Prada's biographical work of St. Josemaria Escriva. Although the opinions about the commentary can vary, depending on where the reader is coming from, the commentary is sufficient in terms of providing the reader the textual sources of each point of "The Way", which can also help the reader have a richer consideration of the points.

This is definitely not for beginners, but for those thoroughly familiar with "The Way", with St. Josemaria Escriva and his writings, and with the spirituality of Opus Dei, this book is definitely a gem!

Good critical edition

Gives you both the Castillian original and English translation, with reasons for certain words, history being redactions, etc. Only negative is that the English translation (the commentary, not the text) could have used a little more editorial review, but aside from a few English mistakes, it's great. If you don't need the critical edition, a basic edition is fine.
