    Kindle version of this book works great

    I bought the kindle version because it's $10 cheaper, and it works better than I expected. For every question there is a link that brings you directly to its answer, and for every answer there's the link to bring you back to the question. That's easier than flipping the paper books. Not to mention that the questions themselves are excellent companions to the FA book.

    Simplistic for board review, may be a good intro to material

    I purchased this book because it was suggested as an adjunct to First Aid for the Step 1. That book is excellent, but this one is a little weak. I was hoping to gain more insight from the case-based format of this book, but was a little underwhelmed with the cases.

    I was disappointed that the cases were very simple, and by the time I started using this book I was already pretty deep in my Step 1 preparation. When I'd read the vignettes, it only took one or two sentences before it was clear exactly what disorder they were trying to get at. The questions were very common sense, like "What is the treatment?" or "What is the mechanism of this disease?" and the explanations were terse and didn't add much to my knowledge since I had already read First Aid. It appears that the cases were written probably by medical students or residents, and not by specialists in their respective fields. This book really felt like a recapitulation of FA in Vignette/Q and A format. So if you've been through FA already, you'll be disappointed.

    The only way I can see this book being useful is if it is used early on, such as in first year or early second year before one has learned a lot of pathology and physiology. In that case it may serve as an interactive introduction to the material that the student is learning. However, if you use this after doing any significant Step 1 preparation, it will be very repetitive and not very beneficial.

    I would suggest doing more question bank questions instead of using this book. If you're looking for an engaging case-based format, try perusing NEJM's "Case Files from the Massachusetts General Hospital". They are multifaceted, complex, and a much better learning tool.

    pretty good, but too many mistakes in answer key

    The questions themselves are OK and complement first aid. However there are quite a few mistakes (especially in the answer pages), which is unacceptable since this is the 3rd edition. I would recommend uworld and Rx before this book.

    Gisa Rauh describes the history and nature of traditional and contemporary accounts and definitions of grammatical categories. She explains their properties and use in generative, cognitive, and functional theories, and considers their function in language typology. She distinguishes between the cognitive functions of categories that relate to traditional parts of speech and serve to structure a language's lexicon; and those which determine the syntactic behaviour of the linguistic items they
    specify.

    About the Author

    Gisa Rauh has been Professor of Linguistics in the English Department of the University of Wuppertal since 1985. She taught previously at Gottingen University and the Free University of Berlin. Her areas of research include theoretical and empirical aspects of deixis, the theory of thematic relations, the syntax of prepositions and prepositional phrases in English, aspects of the lexicon, and linguistic categorization. She has been involved in various large-scale projects, among them Theory of the Lexicon and the European Network Project in the Area of Languages. Her books include Linguistische Beschreibung deiktischer Komplexitat in narrativen Texten (Narr, 1978), Essays on Deixis (Narr, 1983), Tiefenkasus, thematische Relationen und Thetarollen.     I had done a beginners course on accounts before and left that course more confused about the subject than before. I was still confused about debit and credit, double-entries etc. I found this book and it solved my problems. This book will help you as well. It is very clear. It is very structured. Each sentence makes sense. The book is a delight to read (if the term can be used in conjunction with accounts) and I can recommend it without reservations.

    The book Plasma Antennas written by Dr. Ted Anderson, a renown expert in plasma physics, has written a remarkable book. The book gently introduces the reader to plasma antennas and the underlying physics behind their operation. The author is able to interweave conventional antenna theory, such as the factors inherent in impedance and thermal noise, into the specifics of plasma antenna operation. What is particularly unique to this book is the satisfying way in which the author introduces the relevant mathematics of plasma antennas so that the reader gains the analytical and computational skills necessary to specify and design plasma antennas. Unusual to this book is how the author discusses the construction of basic plasma antennas so that the reader can obtain a practical sense of how they work. Plasma selective surfaces are introduced and how reconfigurable filtering of electromagnetic waves can be accomplished.

Gerald Horne’s path breaking new work explores the complex and often fraught relationship between the United States and the island of Hispaniola. Giving particular attention to the responses of African Americans, Horne surveys the reaction in the United States to the revolutionary process in the nation that became Haiti, the splitting of the island in 1844, which led to the formation of the Dominican Republic, and the failed attempt by the United States to annex both in the 1870s.

    How the Haitian Revolution Destroyed Slavery in the Western Hemisphere

    Horne draws the conclusion that the Haitians and their revolution that abolished slavery set the stage of ending the institution of slavery. He shows that emancipation was not given but fought for. Haiti showed Africans and abolitionist alike that the only way slavery was to be abolished is for it to collapse on itself. Slavery was not going to be negotiated nor be reformed. This institution was to be met head on with force. This fervor eventually spread across the hemisphere and ended slavery in many parts of the Western Hemisphere. By the turn of the 19th century, slavery in the hemisphere was completely abolished. The book also gives us the history of the contentious relationship between Haitians and Dominicans. This strained relationship between the two groups who share the same island has been going on since the 19th century and continues to this day. Horne also sheds light on the United States foreign policy towards nations of color. The United States always tries to push forward its imperialistic goals, especially if it’s a country of color and in disarray like Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The book also shows that these chaotic situations that happened in Hispaniola has been the result of covert intervention to capitalize on the situation. The United States to this day still capitalizes on the trials and tribulations of Haiti. Horne feels that this book gives it’s due credit to the Haitian people that throughout the years, this group of people that populate a country that’s no bigger than the state of Maryland, has not only taken on the United States but the European powers in France, Spain and England. He implies that we owe a debt of gratitude to the Haitian people, and we do.

    Horne strikes me as a very important writer on the history of black folk and issues of class, capital and international dynamics that affect our history and the country's as a whole. He is worth getting to know.

    Good detail, very hard to read

    This book is full of valuable primary sources - A+ for effort. It is also one of the most annoying books I have tried to read in a long time. The author seems to have worked with a thesaurus at hand, substituting awkward polysyllables for simple direct language whenever possible. In addition, the organization of the material - whatever that might be, I am still not clear - makes it hard to follow. So, I can recommend it only to dedicated readers who are looking for leads to some really colorful primary sources.

    A very brief introduction...

    This is a very small Kindle title with just about 200 'kindle locations' of content. It is certainly not intended to be a complete or exhaustive commentary, and I do not judge it as such. For someone like me, who knows very little about the principles of Buddhism, it serves as a very basic introduction. In fact, in the introduction section it specifically states the goal of the text is to describe the basic principles and to focus on the essence or essential concepts.

    The Table of Contents:

    Introduction
    The Essence of Buddhism
    The Four Noble Truths (including a description of the eight-fold path--which I won't list out or my review will be entirely to long!)
    Meditation Practice

    I currently live in a part of the world where there are many Buddhist temples and I wanted to have a little more appreciation for the guiding principles. I'm sure I will pick up additional reading, but starting with this text was helpful. I sincerely doubt this will provide any new insight to anyone who has done any study already, but for a person like me it is very interesting!

    Although short this little book provides a good introduction to the history and the basic principles of Buddhism. Should you wish to know more it would be worth getting a bigger book but for an introduction it is very useful as it covers:-
    The essence of Buddhism
    The Four Noble Truths
    The eight-fold path
    Meditation Practice

    basic introduction

    This basic introduction to Buddhism takes less than half an hour to read. It starts with an Introduction and a chapter on the essence of Buddhism. The third chapter is about The Four Noble Truths:

    1) If you are alive,you will suffer;
    2) The cause of suffering is attachment;
    3) You can end suffering;
    4) End suffering by following the eight-fold path.

    The book then gives a basic explanation of this eight-fold path, for exemple: Right View, Right Intention, Right Speech ("The enlightened person therefore tells the truth, speaks with warm gentleness when they do speak, and refrains from speaking when they have nothing important to say") and more. The book concludes with a chapter on meditation.

    The book is very basic and only gives an introduction to Buddhism. I got this book as a freebie, but if you have to pay for it you may want to buy a more in-depth book on Buddhism.

    Amazing

    I just received this in the mail, and I am SO glad I've held out on getting this book!! The 4th edition is so much better than the 3rd!! Not only does it add instructions and step by steps for PhotoShop renderings, it includes a CD that has a video of the author herself doing a step by step of a basic croquis. The book is very daunting at over 500 pages, but the video on the disc gets directly into it and makes it easier to move forward in the book. It throws a lot of information at you at once. LOVE IT though. So glad I have it!

    About the Author
    Larry Percy is Visiting Professor at the University of Oxford and an advertising communications consultant. He has worked for a number of leading advertising agencies in the United States, including Lintas and Young and Rubicam, and has taught marketing theory, advertising strategy, and advertising
    research at Carnegie-Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh. He is the author of several other books on advertising and marketing communications and sits on the editorial board of a number of journals, including the Journal of Marketing Research. He is also a former Industry Director of
    the Association for Consumer Research in the United States. Richard Elliott is Professor of Marketing and Consumer Research, Warwick Business School, and prior to this was Professor of Marketing at the University of Exeter. He has worked in brand management with a number of multinationals and was
    formerly account manager at the international advertising agency Norman, Craig and Kummel. He has published articles in numerous journals and taught at Lancaster University, the London Business School, and the ESSEC in Paris. His research interests include socio-cultural aspects of advertising,
    dysfunctional consumer behaviour, and consumption and self-identity issues.
