Self-published and it shows

I picked this up based on a recommendation from a work colleague and I don't understand why he recommended it. I found this difficult to read due to poor choice of vocabulary and lack of logical message structure. I found too many sections to be about introductory Agile concepts rather than specialised Data Warehouse / BI issues so I ended up spending a lot of time skimming.

Formatting for the Kindle was very poor and many figures are not understandable.

There are also a number of cutesy acronyms based on Ceregenic's specific approach that I just found distracting.

I have a very strong suspicion that the interesting parts of this book could be better communicated as tightly copy-edited articles or blog posts. Nothing really came out to me as particularly insightful but given that I drifted into skimming, I may possibly have missed something buried in the noise.

Disappointment

I had high hopes that this book would clearly explain how to implement a BI solution using scrum. I expected it to contain some tangible examples both of Scrum and BI increments built using Scrum. There are many simple and tangible explanations of Scrum available on the web that do not take 300 pages. I did not find this book useful.

First, I found the organization of the book hard to follow. Second, I found the explanations to be simply a verbose run-of-the-mill explanation of Scrum. In fact, I found them confusing at times. Frankly, I get tired of reading Scrum stuff in which there is a continuous exaltation of Scrum and a repetitious denigration of anything that is not Scrum. Not everything in the world that isn't Scrum is BDUF (big design up front); nor do other ways always take forever. Third, there was little tangible description either BI or data warehousing in the book. However, my biggest objection is that there are almost no examples. The one data model example (of an ORDERS data model on page 129) has several problems: 1. it is a generic model. Would someone be actually implementing this data model in a BI environment using Scrum or anything else for that matter? Why would you even need Scrum to come up with this model? On close examination, is the model meaningful and correct? Is the relationship between Order, Party, Party Role and Party Role Type necessary? Is is even correct? If an order can have only one party, how many roles can they possibly be playing? Since an Order has only one Party, but a Party can have many Party Relationships, which Party Relationships are relevant to the Order? This example is near useless. Also, the book does not refer to integrated sandboxing, which would be essential for rapid turnaround of Scrum increments. After years of data warehousing I have found that there are a few simple but essential principles to achieving success at it, 1. break the work into increments; 2. make the increments short (1-3 months); 3. timebox the work; 4. deliver a prototype early (thus the need for sandboxing); and 5. gather a small, cross-functional team.

The author advocates presenting a tiered model. Well, some modelers occasionally do that but most professional modelers do not. A model should be presented in whatever way will be most useful and understandable to the audience. It is still not a typical informational model and I don't see what the data model, tiered or not, adds to the discussion of BI with Scrum.

If you are looking for a tangible way to do BI with Scrum, I would not recommend this book. If you are looking for a good description of Scrum, you can easily Google it and get a good understanding of it in no time.

Great Insight! Defintely worth a read

I bought this book intending to gain understanding of how you can adapt a relative expensive traditional data warehouse approach to the more money orientated CEO.

Whilst the book doesn't contain everything it sets a very powerful view of the future and to put simply explains succintly how to win the hearts and minds of any senior level stakeholders.

My only issue with the book is that it is full of typos. Words which simply don't make any sense and could have been picked out by a simple spell checker!

A set of useful templates would have been nice but for the price paid I think its a bargain!

About the Author

Luigi Fugaro

Luigi Fugaro had his first encounter with computers back in the early 1980s, when he was still a kid. He started with a Commodore VIC-20, passing through a Sinclair, a Commodore 64, and an Atari ST 1040; here, he spent days and nights giving breath mints to Otis. Then, he took a big jump with a 486DX2 66 MHz, and he started programming in Pascal and BASIC. GOTO 1998. He started his career as a webmaster doing HTML, JavaScript, Applets, and some graphics with PaintShop Pro. He then switched to Delphi and Visual Basic, and finally, he could start working on Java projects. While working on Java, Luigi met his mentor, Gianluca Magalotti, who helped him a lot in acquiring more hard and soft skills. Luigi has been developing all kinds of web applications in Java―dealing with both backend and frontend frameworks for various system integrators. In the last system integrator he worked for, Luigi met another special person, Pierluigi Lucci, who trusted and helped Luigi in his career, which earned Luigi the SCJP 6 and SCEA 5 Java certifications. Then, he took the big jump toward Red Hat. Luigi is now working with Red Hat as a senior middleware consultant, where he can count on a group of highly talented people to help him daily. He would like to mention all of them, but two of them need a special mention: uL, the pragmatist, and aL, the grandpa, for helping Luigi during his hard days at work.

Very good addition to your tech library!

Here are my insights about the book: after the first introduction chapters (1-3), the book moves to the Management of logging resources with a set of recipes for configuring the logging subsystem. Next an in-depth description about the clustering options with focus on the mod_cluster module for load balancing. In the following chapters the author moves the focus to the Management of server resources with two detailed chapters about the Command Line. I found these chapters quite useful both as a guide and as a reference.
Following up two chapters about Hardening WildFly which explain how you can harden WildFly communication, such as Web Console communicating on secure channels via HTTPS, domain controller, and host controller.
Last but not least the book also includes some useful recipes about Openshift and Docker whichcan help you to deploy your application on WildFly directly on the cloud or using Linux containers.
I've found this book a very good addition to my library and would recommend it to anyone approaching this technology.

Directly from a Red Hatter expert this is a really useful book if you need to start with this totally new version of the formerly known as "Jboss" application server. The core features are explained by examples eg: clustering, HA, datasoruces etc. The book also goes into deep dive of the powerfull CLI management tool.
The book covers the new features and guides you to using WildFly in the OpenShift cloud environment and there is a really on the edge chapter on Wildfly and Docker.

Great reference for Wildfly CLI recipes

I've been working with Wildfly (or JBoss Application Server) for around 5 years now, but still find myself having to reach out to google for those recipes that I need every now & then. Wildfly Cookbook is now my go-to cache for all those recipes.
* Need to create a datasource? It's there!
* Need to harden your Wildfly instance? It's there too!

Chapters 1, 2 & 3 are your standard get started chapters. Where this really shines is Chapter 5 onwards. I really like the fact that JMeter is used in conjunction with the recipe, it differentiates it from a cut-paste job from any internet blog.

The chapters on load balancing & server hardening is are great additions as well, one that is of great help if you're involved with DevOps (or just plain interested in how that works).

Finally, I read the chapters on OpenShift & Docker with great interest, as I hadn't delved into them as much as I'd wanted to, & this gave me a great opportunity to actually try Wildfly on OpenShift/Docker hands-on.

Having CLI recipes is great because it's exceptionally easy to automate your server administration (as opposed to point & click web interfaces).

Finally, a word of warning, if it's not readily apparent from the description, the cover & the review material available, this is NOT a resource for folks looking to learn more about JavaEE, or JavaEE development on Wildfly. This covers server administration, deployments, etc, development isn't this books focus. A great book (also by Packpub) that I'd recommend for that is Java EE 7 Development with WildFly by Michał Ćmil, Michał Matłoka & Francesco Marchioni.

About the Author

S. Yizhar was the pen name of Yizhar Smilansky, born in Rehovot in 1916. A longtime member of the Knesset, he is most famous as the author of Khirbet Khizeh and the untranslated magnum opus Days of Ziklag. He died in 2006. Nicholas de Lange, a professor emeritus of Hebrew and Jewish studies at Cambridge University, has translated many Hebrew novels, including Preliminaries by S. Yizhar (2007). Yaacob Dweck translated Haim Sabato's The Dawning of the Day (2006). He is an assistant professor of history and Judaic studies at Princeton University. David Shulman teaches Sanskrit and other Indian languages at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has published numerous books and is the author of Dark Hope: Working for Peace in Israel and Palestine (2007). Shulman was named a MacArthur Fellow in 1987.

A transcendent argument, ethics of warfare

The story of the exile of the Palestinians from their lands in the first of Israel's wars - a process that is ongoing - and a portrayal of ongoing human indifference to the plight of others continues to resonate. It's unfortunate that all the extraordinary flexibility of English cannot duplicate the power of the original Hebrew; its allusions to biblical texts are barely shadowed in translation. When Moshe and Shlomo - Moses and Saul - begin to argue, readers get some hint of what may be going on in the original language - an argument that transcends time, tradition, the particular circumstances of a single - and singular - war.

A universal condemnation of those who exile

On the surface, this is a small event: Israeli soldiers in 1948 empty an Arab village without death or injury. By some standards, this could be called humane or benign as the soldiers didn't display sadistic behavior or take liberties with the residents. But only on paper; from the first page the tone of this piece reflects the humiliation, desperation and shock of the displaced residents as well as the sickening sense of moral compromise and death.

The prose has been described as meandering, but I found it lyrical and hypnotic. I agree, however, that the narrator was using it in part to mislead the reader and in part to distract himself, almost as if he was trying to distract himself from the memory of his participation in brutality.

There were several passages that stood out for me. At one point they come upon a village elder. The soldiers come with such hostility and anger left over from the Holocaust, but the people they encounter do not, by any measure, merit that. They try to treat the soldiers with respect, but they are instead spoken to as if they were animals who are irritating them because they aren't following order. The soldiers, annoyed by having to be there, don't respect the residents they're displacing at all. The fact that they don't rise up against them (the soldiers are far outnumbered) confirms their feeling that these people are inferior. And yet, when they come across a beautiful horse, one of them played with it as if were a treasured child.

The narrator is tortured by the reactions of every person he runs into, but it's the defiant child he sees at the end who forces him to realize that what he and his comrades are doing is inflicting exile. This is what he can't live with- it's clear that he signed on to protect, not destroy- but he is also powerless to stop it (or walk away).

It wasn't clear until the end when this book was supposed to take place. Further, while the village and historical details were referenced a few times, in many ways this could have been a story about soldiers and exile anywhere. In other words, while this was a condemnation of Israel's actions at the beginning of their history, it's also a universal condemnation of war.
