This is a must read book on marriage and relationships! It is one of the best I've ever read. It is easy to read because the ideas are written and explained so clearly. The book is full of helpful stories that illustrate the ideas and show you how to implement the changes you want to make. Even when reading the introduction I began making changes immediately. Hubby even listened better!

I consider my marriage to be a good one -- but there are always areas that can use some fine-tuning! So when I came upon Dr. Welpton's blog and immediately found useful advice on how to communicate better, I wanted to read this book to get more info -- and I already put some of his techniques to work successfully!

A quick example of how I used some of what I learned in this book: Hubby and I had different opinions about bringing someone on to help us with our home-based business. In the past, I would have just "bulldozed" him over, forcing my reasons on him while he would have equally and vigorously defended his own objections.

But this time, I did what Dr. Welpton advised: I repeated back what he was saying to me, basically word-for-word. I didn't try to convince or persuade him of my opinion; I just really HEARD him and LISTENED to him. More importantly, hubby GOT that I listened to him and UNDERSTOOD what he was saying. Then, the miraculous happened: he also LISTENED and UNDERSTOOD what I was saying, too! We had a clear conversation, without extreme emotion and we both felt clearer about each other's views. That's not to say we AGREED with each other -- we didn't -- but we respected and understood each other. Now we have a plan as to what steps we are going to take to bring someone on in the business. I predict this will turn out well, because there will be no resentment on either side. A small success, perhaps, but an important one; and I will continue to use this strategy!

Bottom line: the info in Dr. Welpton's book is practical, clear and immediately applicable! I enjoyed reading the personal stories of others who are profiled in the book, and to see how they evolved. Dr. Welpton's writing style is clear, caring and compassionate and made me feel like I was having a personal therapy session. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to improve their relationships!

An Enlightening Read

Attract Love, Intimacy and Money by Doug Welpton, M.D. is a fascinating book filled with vignettes of real life problems and solutions. There are questions to orient the reader before each chapter, examples with teachable moments and insights into the dynamics of the problems, and behavioral changes to incorporate as coping skills. This book was insightful for me. It is easy to read and to comprehend. Diagrams help picture many points. Life's lessons should only be so simple, but that's why we have psychiatrists to create sense and happiness out of human drama and stress. This is a success formula.

The original Cambridge History of India published between 1922 and 1937 did much to formulate a chronology for Indian history and describe the administrative structures of government in India. The New Cambridge History of India series, to which Thomas R. Metcalf's book belongs, is designed to take full account of recent scholarship and changing conceptions of South Asia's historical development. Ideologies of the Raj examines the ways in which the British sought to justify and thus legitimate their rule over India. Thomas Metcalf demonstrates eloquently that the British devised two divergent strategies to justify their authority: one defined essential characteristics which the Indians shared with the British themselves, while the other emphasized the presumed qualities of enduring 'difference'. Overtime, however, it was the differences - differences of history, race, gender and society -which embedded themselves most deeply in the British idea of India, and so became predominant. Since the British constructed few explicit ideologies of empire, the author explores the workings of the Raj through a study of its underlying assumptions as revealed in policies and writings. This timely book fills an enormous gap in scholarship as the author, drawing from his own research as well as from the writings of younger scholars in India and elsewhere, provides us with a synthetic view of the ideologies of the Raj during the years of uncontested British supremacy from 1858 to 1918.In short this is an excellent book, well argued and well written that will be useful for students and to the educated reader.

Great translation of Arabian Nights

Haddawy's translation of the Arabian Nights is the best I've found, with just the right amount of adult emphasis on the tales' erotic elements - not too little or too much (like Burton). While translating, Haddawy makes some word substitutions which are agreeable (I liked his "dervishes" over "calenders"), but other substitutions unfortunately take away from the rich Middle Eastern/fantasy setting ("God" instead of Allah, "sword" instead of scimitar, "demon" instead of genie).

A note to those new to Arabian Nights: the stories-within-stories trope gets complicated at times, but that's part of the Nights' artistry. "Shahrazad said that the tailor told the king of China that the barber told the guests that he [the barber] had said to the caliph that his second brother..." I'm not making this up; this is a real example from the book. Readers who can keep straight the ever-deepening strata of stories should justly pat themselves on the back afterward, when the narrative quickly climbs back to the uppermost level at story's end.

A Good Compilation With Some Annoying Quirks

This book is a compilation of about a quarter of the Arabian Nights tales by Husain Haddawy. It does not contain any of the most famous Nights tales, such as Aladdin, Sindbad or Maaruf the Cobbler, but it does contain many other stories which are enjoyable in their own rights. There is also a good introduction which discusses the various versions of the Nights and their value to the reader. Of course Haddawy dismisses older versions as outdated relics, but this is only to be expected.

This edition has some annoying quirks which lessened my enjoyment of the overall collection. Instead of calling God, Allah, and keeping the Middle Eastern flavor of the work, Haddawy calls Him God. He calls djinnis "demons" instead of calling them djinnis, so for example someone finding a magic lamp will rub it, and a "demon" will appear to grant three wishes. And, as already noted, this edition does not contain any of the most famous stories from the Nights. This version is heavy on the realistic stories and literary tales and light on the fantasy tales, so for example the tale of the ebony horse is not here, nor the tale of Ali Baba and the 40 thieves, nor the tale of Aladdin. There are some fantasies here, such as the story of the four-colored fishes and the cursed prince, but not many. This edition did not impress me as much as the Burton edition did, and my recommendation for it is lukewarm at best.

The most accurate English translation

The translation by Haddawy is very accurate, although like others, I would prefer that some Middle Eastern flavour was preserved (no need to translate "zeb", "jinn", "wali" and such). It's true that some of the most famous stories from One Thousand and One Nights are not included in this compillation. This has to do with the fact that this book is based on an Arabic manuscript that does not include those stories. However, there is a separate book by Haddawy with those other stories.

Overall, I prefer this edition over Richard Burton's. I don't mean to say that Burton's edition is bad, but I feel that it doesn't preserve the intricacies of the original.

The present work is the first volume of a substantially enlarged version of the mimeographed notes of a course of lectures first given by me in the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta, India, during 1964-65. When it was suggested that these lectures be developed into a book, I readily agreed and took the opportunity to extend the scope of the material covered. No background in physics is in principle necessary for understand­ ing the essential ideas in this work. However, a high degree of mathematical maturity is certainly indispensable. It is safe to say that I aim at an audience composed of professional mathematicians, advanced graduate students, and, hopefully, the rapidly increasing group of mathematical physicists who are attracted to fundamental mathematical questions. Over the years, the mathematics of quantum theory has become more abstract and, consequently, simpler. Hilbert spaces have been used from the very beginning and, after Weyl and Wigner, group representations have come in conclusively. Recent discoveries seem to indicate that the role of group representations is destined for further expansion, not to speak of the impact of the theory of several complex variables and function-space analysis. But all of this pertains to the world of interacting subatomic particles; the more modest view of the microscopic world presented in this book requires somewhat less. The reader with a knowledge of abstract integration, Hilbert space theory, and topological groups will find the going easy.

Great Drawing Book

This book is one of the best drawing books I've encountered, probably the best botanical drawing book out there. It presents pretty no-nonsense process of handling plant specimens and identifying plant parts--including dissections and lighting, placement, and storage. West outlines basic techniques in graphite, ink, scraper board, water-color, gouache, and acrylic. No explanation of use of pastels or oil or colored pencil (which i am particularly interested in). More color pictures would have made the painting explanations more comprehensible. Still, a great book to have in one's botalical illustration arsenal.
