A Great Way for Beginners to Learn

I've been working through the Franklin and Makar book for several weeks now. For someone like myself who has little programming experience and no previous knowledge of ActionScript, it is an excellent learning aid. The authors take the reader step-by-step, starting with simple projects and progressing to more advanced ones.

The authors say up front that this book assumes a basic knowledge of how Flash works. They focus on ActionScript, not how to set up objects on the stage, for example. So, if you're completely new to Flash, you might want to work through one of the excellent tutorials that are available for learning Flash MX 2004.

Having an English-instructor and professional-writer background, I'm sensitive to language usage. The authors' style is very conversational, a plus in this case. I did not notice the writing errors that one reviewer mentions. Nor did I detect the skipping around that another reviewer alluded to.

If you purchase a used copy, be sure that the CD is included. It contains two .fla versions of each Flash project: one without the ActionScripts, which you are asked to add the scripts to; and a completed version with all the ActionScripts intact.

I dropped one star from my rating for a few reasons. First, I wish they had included a .pdf version of the book, which would be much easier to read than the somewhat small print in the book. (I used the sample .pdf version of the first lesson, available online, to begin my studying and was sorry to have to switch over to the book when that lesson ended.)

Secondly, the authors fail to suggest that the reader first open the completed version of a Flash project to see what it does before analyzing the scripting.

Thirdly, the authors seem to think that typing in the ActionScript is a good learning exercise and make a point of directing the user to do that throughout the book. This approach may work for some learners, but for me it would just be a tedious exercise. Instead, I want to focus on the logic behind the scripting. So, instead of typing a script into its project, I copied and pasted each script from the completed Flash file into a Word file where I built my own set of notes.

My final reason for dropping one star is that in some cases I had to go to the internet to get further explanations on a topic the authors were discussing. This is a relatively minor issue because no book can cover everything, and the essense of learning is to seek out what you want to know.

Overall, this book has met my expectations and is doing exactly what I wanted it to do--taking me by baby steps through the mysteries of ActionScript 2.

Great tutorial, so-so reference

This book contains a series of great tutorials on the most common ActionScript tasks you might encounter. It starts with the basics, so even the non-programmer should be able to get up to speed quickly. I also use it as a reference book sometimes, but I usually have to extract the info I need from one of the tutorials, making it hard to track down the one line of code I need. I usually use it by doing tutorials similar to projects I'm working on, so that I can immediately practic and apply what I've learned. The included CD is top-notch with all of the files you need for the tutorials and more. I highly recommend this book, although you might want to buy a reference book too (or just try the Flash help menu - it's vastly improved over previous versions).

The Big Book of Quantum Optics

This is the definitive book on Quantum Optics, and contains sections on semi-classical theory, quantum field theory, and lots of other things. Unfortunately, it does not cover research after the mid-1990s.

Bottom Line: This is the best reference book in the field of plain old Quantum Optics.

Very well writen book on Quantum Optics

This book is a self contained one on Quantum Optics. It gives systematic treatment of nearly very aspects of this field, good mathematical description of some methods and idea and even some historical developments of the topics. Though it seems a huge volume, it is really worth reading for EVERY beginner in this field. With this book, one does not need to look for other references to understand the topics.

Getting over on the Hill by Acting like a Courtier and Winning like a Prince

The Capitol Hill Playbook is highly recommended for students of political science, history, media studies and literature, as well as those who want to learn about human nature. The author's grasp of history, both Renaissance and contemporary, is one of the book's great strengths. The use of Castiglione's Book of the Courtier balances out Machiavelli's more cynical Prince. He deftly navigates between these Renaissance texts and the contemporary political world, following well-selected quotations with examples that are quite relevant. Rather than writing a purely Machiavellian book, however, Nicholas Balthazar instructs his ideal modern courtier in diplomacy and tact. His unblinking pragmatism links his approach with Machiavelli's while stripping away the piety and hypocrisy intrinsic to politics. Finally, it is clear and accessible without being oversimplified, a delicate balancing act and an important book for anyone considering a life of public service, whether in the spotlight or behind the scenes.

This book is more about the 'why' of politics than the 'how'. For example, though it often explains 'how' to do things, the focus is rather on why doing things a certain way is important. The title is a bit deceiving. It's part history, part memoir, part advice book. If you are new to the world of politics, the book is filled with important things to know. I wish I had had this book before I started my career. The book may be helpful to seasoned politicos, but it is essential to new politicos.

Very useful, very easy read for anyone interested in politics

One of the smartest people I've ever known said to me, "Most books only have one or two good ideas. A really good book might have three good ideas." This is a three-idea book. Balthazar fills his book with observations and ideas guaranteed to be useful to those wishing to enter the political field.

Perhaps one of the worst things for this book is that its target audience is unlikely to ever pick it up because they're the least aware they need its help. This book will best serve those raised outside of politics who do not spend much of their time people-watching. If you've lived around DC your entire life and enjoy thinking about why people act they way they do, many of the observations in this book (though by no means all) might have already occurred to you. However, even if you truly have thought of all the ideas in this book, and the most it does for you is to remind you of certain things you should be actively thinking about all the time, it will have done its job of guiding you and still prove very useful.

To illustrate this advice, Balthazar fills the book with short blurbs from history. If you like learning about interesting people in the past, those bits make this already easy-to-read book even easier.

If you know anyone who is either just trying to enter politics or who has just entered, this book will be immensely useful.

About the Author
Robert N. Gunn has worked at TWI since 1987, when he was appointed to the Materials Department as Research Engineer: stainless steels and corrosion in the Materials Department. He is currently Manager of the Corrosion and Analytical Chemistry section at TWI - Plant Integrity Ltd. Robert Gunn has produced over 20 published technical papers and has undertaken a great deal of research in the specialised area of duplex stainless steels.

Mackenzie and Cade

Mackenzie and Cade met when they were 10 years old when she and her parents move next door. They become best friends and then they start becoming more. When they are 15 years old, Mackenzie is kidnapped and put into slavery in Mexico. She's raped and tortured for 3 years when she's finally free at the age of 18 years old. She experienced and saw so many horrible things. She's definitely not the same girl.

Mackenzie always loved Cade and he is what helped her make it out of that horrible situation. She thought of him and remembered him even at times she wasn't sure what her name was. She's definitely not anywhere near the girl she was once upon her time. She's different and alot of the people in town treat her terribly for things she had no control over. Even her stepmother Cade's mother treats her poorly. Emily and a couple of others were friends with Mackenzie growing up but they treat her horribly when she comes back. She's jealous and vindictive and will do and say anything to keep Cade.

Cade has felt immense guilt and he's felt that part of him died when she was taken. He loved her and felt like he was supposed to protect her. He's tried to go on and finally he's started dating Emily who always wanted him. He still loves and wants to be with Mackenzie but he feels he needs to at least be with Emily some. But then some horrible things happen to Emily and he's trapped.

Loved Kenzie and Cade

I read this book when it was first released and I almost loved it more than her fallen series. Almost. This book kept me on the edge of my seat and always had me rooting for kenzie and Cade. There are some parts of this book that had me wanting to throw my kindle across the room, but the more I read the more I fell in love with the story. So if you want something great to read do yourself a favor and blur some lines cause the tears you shed reading this book will do just that...

I have yet to read a word by Chloe Walsh that I have not fallen madly in love with. With each book her writing gets better and better. Surpassing her last published book when I didn't think it was possible. I really didn't think she could beat Treacherous. Boy was I wrong!

Blurred Lines is unlike ANYTHING I have ever read. Ever. It's hard to even form words to accurately explain my feelings. I swooned hard, loved deeply, even laughed at times. Then I shattered into a billion pieces, my soul was shredded, and my heart wept and broke and splintered. I became enraged and murderous, livid beyond reason. I gasped for air, questioned what the heck I was reading, then fell in love with each and every word as my heart was ripped from my chest. The writing and these words are so breathtakingly beautiful, they live inside you. You live and breathe them, consume and devour them. You see, this book is everything and you will FEEL everything. Chloe's writing is really indescribable when it comes to Blurred Lines. It is complicated and earth shattering and beautiful and just is. It just is and this book just needs to be read.

Blurred Lines is by far Chloe's best work to date and I cannot wait for more from her. Especially a sequel to the story of Cade and Mackenzie. I need more! This is a must read and not only a best read of 2015, but a best EVER read.

Al-Qaeda Ghandi Humanitarian Globalization

The author stated that: "My object in this book is to argue that a global society has come into being, but possesses as yet no political institutions proper to its name, and that new forms of militancy, like that of Al-Qaeda, achieve meaning in this institutional vacuum, while representing in their own way the search for a global politics" (p.8). While the author seems to be implying that Al-Qaeda is some type of typical NGO (non-governmental organization) seeking world peace by helping others to achieve global humanity, the author is no Pollyanna regarding the Islamo fascists: he is clearly aware that Al-Qaeda and its associates are seeking their One World view of humanistic justice through violence - should their `peaceful' overtures inviting infidels to embrace Islam as dhimmi fail. The author tries to convince the reader that Al-Qaeda views itself as being on a `humanitarian-like mission' in appealing to atheists to embrace the Muslim Allah. The author contends that Al-Qaeda tries to show its concern for `humanism' by warning the masses that atheistic capitalistic countries are harming the world environment through Global Warming (which somehow can be avoided by people embracing Islam). To further tie-in Al-Qaeda as having a `humanistic' perspective, the author drags in India's Mahatma Ghandi. While most people are aware of Ghandi's non-violent political protests against some British injustice, the author discusses Ghandi's militant-side: whereby Ghandi at times condoned violence against the British `occupiers.' This completes the author's circle of world `humanism': Al-Qaeda is like Ghandi: both urge peaceful resolution to disputes, but should peaceful enticements fail, then violence is permissible against those who rebuff their peaceful overtures. Not that the author is trying to equate Al-Qaeda with Ghandi, just that they have similar `humanistic' perspectives (actions) in achieving their version of a peaceful globalized ummah community. The author all too-frequently re-writes his sentences in trying to present his themes in new perspectives, but an effort which just unnecessarily lengthens his book. (Okay, I think the author is a little wordy.) I learned more about Ghandi than I did about Al-Qaeda. This book isn't going to contribute to a U.S. soldier stationed somewhere in the Middle East in trying to figure out how to defeat or `engage' Al-Qaeda, it's for academia musing. I'm sure the author is very insightful about this topic, it's just not one of the first 25 books that I would recommend in reading to learn something really meaningful about Al-Qaeda.

'She don't make me feel like you, on the real she ain't you...you, you, you'

Alazo Moore rokked your soul in V1 with his Billy Dee Williams suave-nicity and a swag that superseded the Richter Scale. Well, fasten your seat belts with a deadbolt because Trent Davis, hmmph!!! Prepare yourself to be enamored with the passion and plight of this charismatic d-boy, this doting dad, this MIA husband that has arisen from the dead...one even calls him a 'zombie.' He left us with erratic emotions in V1...in V2- he will massacre all judgments and prejudiced opinions on this new trek of an authentic hustla. Zombie portrays stoic and bland...but the emotions Mr. Davis will elicit will electrify, electrocute, and burn every thread off of any mummie's garbs.

V1 brought us mountains of griefs to bear...unbearable heartache and just when we didn't think we could lift our heads...we were blessed with a miracle showing that GOD did indeed love the Bell Family. Then we are slapped with the revelation that the dead had indeed arisen although death never captured our charming Trent. Multifacted Trent Davis is in Italy playing house with his firstborn, his only son & the needy Gianna all for the sake of knowing his only son, his firstborn child and one last hope that one day...someday he may see his beloved 3 Bell Babies. Sounds twisted...what about you living but not because you feel that void, that hole that only one woman could fill. You live with the guilt of what your choices caused the loves of your life. You've lost so much and although you are alive, you are indeed the walking dead. Across the world, a heartbroken wife is trying to piece together her life without the only man she's ever loved and live for the sake of the 3 babies they created all in the name of Real Love. Meanwhile Val and Alazo are engaged, living the fabulous life of the marvelous in a mansion decorated in Valerie Bell's expensive taste, doting on their love child, Alana and welcoming Quishawn into their immaculate world. What happens when all presumptions are reversed? What happens when what you've prayed for...begged GOD for...wished upon many a star for...actually is granted? Takerra Allen is a phenomenal writer with skills that words cannot describe! V2: More Power is a great story. Ms. Allen paints vivid pictures with her words that allow readers to feel what each character feels. Without giving anything away, I loved that each character experienced a conflict that allowed them to either grow or stand up and face each challenge like a man or woman. Each character had to exhibit strength in order to fight battles that could have ruined them. This book was filled with wisdom and I found myself highlighting passages that contained a message or a life lesson. This book was entertaining, it was heart wrenching, its was riveting, it was though provoking, it was emotional. V2: More Power was excellent!

Words can't describe how much I really enjoyed this book. Takerra is a phenomenal writer with the ability to transform mere words to create a lasting impression. These are not just characters in a book but people you become connected to through out the story. I personally begged for V2 (with FB messages to prove) because I knew Takerra would deliver. No Spoilers Here.... But I will say you will not be disappointed. Every question is answered and every thought is confirmed. This is definitely my best read in 2015! With that said, if you are reading reviews to determine if you should purchase this book.... Buy it Today! Oh and "Do Better". DBGrant

Apart from an introductory chapter giving a brief summary of Newtonian and Lagrangian mechanics, this book consists entirely of questions and solutions on topics in classical mechanics that will be encountered in undergraduate and graduate courses. These include one-, two-, and three- dimensional motion; linear and nonlinear oscillations; energy, potentials, momentum, and angular momentum; spherically symmetric potentials; multi-particle systems; rigid bodies; translation and rotation of the reference frame; the relativity principle and some of its consequences. The solutions are followed by a set of comments intended to stimulate inductive reasoning and provide additional information of interest. Both analytical and numerical (computer) techniques are used obtain and analyze solutions. The computer calculations use Mathematica (version 7), and the relevant code is given in the text. It includes use of the interactive Manipulate function which enables one to observe simulated motion on a computer screen, and to study the effects of changing parameters.

The book will be useful to students and lecturers in undergraduate and graduate courses on classical mechanics, and students and lecturers in courses in computational physics.

About the Author
Owen de Lange is a Professor of Physics at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. His research interests include: electromagnetic theory, molecular physics, dislocation interactions, superconductivity and educational physics. He is co-author of two monographs: Operator methods in quantum mechanics, and Multipole theory in electromagnetism. The former book was awarded the University of Natal book prize (1994) and the Bill Venter/Altron award (1995) for research published in book form. John Pierrus is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Physics at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He has published research in the fields of chemical kinetics, solid state physics, molecular physics, gas dynamics and educational physics. His teaching interests include electromagnetic theory and classical mechanics at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level.
