Its contents are, in general, well organised and the intuitive ideas behind the different multivariate methods, the asymptotic expansion techniques and the calculation of error bounds using scale mixtures, are well expressed . Yasunori Fujikoshi, DSc, is Professor Emeritus at Hiroshima University (Japan) and Visiting Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Chuo University (Japan). He has authored over 150 journal articles in the area of multivariate analysis.

Vladimir V. Ulyanov, DSc, is Professor in the Department of Mathematical Statistics at Moscow State University (Russia) and is the author of nearly fifty journal articles in his areas of research interest, which include weak limit theorems, probability measures on topological spaces, and Gaussian processes.

Ryoichi Shimizu, DSc, is Professor Emeritus at the Institute of Statistical Mathematics (Japan) and is the author of numerous journal articles on probability distributions.

This book is now 97 years old, mostly for the hell of it

This book was written during World War One in the years from 1916 to 1918. The author, who I usually see spelled as Kraus, blamed Prussian monarchy and militarism for declaring war on Russia, France, and then invading Belgium because an arms race had made Germans expect easy expansion over whatever territories they could occupy. After the first month of war, the battle of the Marne, in which troops from England stopped the Prussian movement to result in years of mole warfare, the Kaiser hoped to negotiate separate treaties with each of the defeated powers until December, 1916, when a great announcement of peace based on negotiations with the rest of the world as a group was not capable of generating hope in a world which was aware of the extent of monarchs lying.

Near the end of this book, the pathology of warfare based on the assassination of a prince, going on for years, was clearly described:

His death hoisted the signal, visible far and wide,
for the beginning of the slaughter of millions. (p. 290).

Millions on millions allowed themselves to be led
to slaughter, like docile sheep, to avenge
the death of their prince. (p. 291)

To go back to ancient roots, this book identifies antediluvian pretensions of a wicked world being wiped out by puissant power to set the global stage for the superpowers that soon became the Gog and Magog pitted against each other for the most rewarding economic system for Prussian Junkers, military industrial media complexes, and the collective incompetence that had a steam explosion destroy the containment for what was in a nuclear reactor core at Chernobyl in April 1986.

Strange feelings in 1963 after the Cuban missile crisis in October 1962 and the Bay of Pigs in 1961 made me want to have as much truth as the great thinkers who were not entirely happy for hundreds of years before I was born. It makes me feel Polish, like Nietzsche felt Polish hundreds of years after one of his ancestors was driven out of Catholic Poland because he got his ideas from the Reformation, and the Sorbs in Europe were used to a feudal system trying to keep them enslaved unless let my people go made more sense to the individual creative subjectivities we turned out to be.

The best book on what ninjutsu really is.

I can understand why someone is disappointed with this book and it's contents. Because it really discloses the essence of japanese ninpo and it is sometimes not what the reader expects. This is not a book about secret ninja techniques. It is mostly tales (some factual, some fiction) of ancient masters, mostly Hatsumi's own teacher Takamatsu Sensei. Each tale portrays the essence of ninpo and by reading all the tales, you will have clear understanding of it. If you don't get it, then you have been too mislead by all the lies about ninjutsu. Open your heart and read with thought. This is not for the illiterate - lots of metaphores are used and it is not an easy book. This will be read over and over during your training years!

Hatsumi-soke masterfully explains many of the precepts and philosophies behind ninpo specifically and martial arts in general. Many in the Western World will mistake his confidence for arrogance, but that is because the Oriental mind-set is not understood very easily in the Western world. Hatsumi-soke has earned the title "grandmaster" of the art of ninjutsu, and is therefore entitled to the confidence he displays. But at the same time, you do detect the humility that also accompanies that title in his writings. Truly, this book is a must-read for any who are considering or traveling the path of Bujinkan budo.

Standing on the summit for the first time

This is probably the first book to faithfully reveal Hatsumi-sensei's approach to writing. In some of Soke's other works, the translation and editing have in many ways dampened the total effect of Soke's words. Not so in this book. The translator has done a superb job in capturing Soke's feeling in the written form. And he has done so by simply removing himself from the equation and instead has allowed Soke's words to do all the work.

Throughout this book, the reader ought to be able to sense the depth of the art that Hatsumi-sensei is master of. The richness of the traditions and the scope of the moral and ethical development possible through an honest approach to martial arts is clearly in evidence. This has nothing to do with 'Oriental mysticism' nor has it anything to do with techniques in the technical sense. Yet, if one has the eyes to see, the mystical is simply honesty and the secrets to the techniques stem from this. In this book, both are more than visible.

Through stories of his own teacher (beautifully presented as fables and legends) as well his own experiences, one gets the sense that Hatsumi-sensei has just surpassed a personal barrier of sorts. There is a sense of confidence that emerges from the words and one can only feel inspired to emulate the development displayed.

This book is not, as should be expected from Hatsumi-sensei, a chronologically organised tome. Stepping away from the 1-2-3 approach to learning, Soke's words are imbued with character and observation and in that sense, one ought to hesitate to use the word 'topic' when describing each chapter. Perhaps 'situations' may be a better term.

From history to warnings, from martial movement to moral awareness, this book, quite literally, has it all. Hidden in plain sight as it is, the information in this book serves as an excellent screener (as well as screening device) for those wishing to understand more of the art of Hatsumi-sensei. As an honest approach to the world of ninjutsu and the martial arts, this book is an absolute must.

In any event, this is a fantastic and inspiring book for all woodworkers. In a word, unique! This is perhaps the best way of describing the contents of this book. Author Kape has a great imagination and it is well projected in this fabulous book. There are, as the cover suggests, 15 one-of-a-kind projects for the scroll saw. There is a classic and two neo-classic sets that are close to traditional but certainly unique as cut with the scrollsaw. There is also a set reminiscent of the Knights of the Round Table, a classic Greek set, a Czarist set and an Olde English set. Add these to the architectural collection like Paris, Canterbury, Venice, Rome and San Francisco and you have a fully rounded out chess set collection that is to die for. Now, if you were counting you will realize that the list is short by four. These are made up by the author's plans for a chess board, a travelling chess board, a storage box and a vertical wall mounted chess set. Kape provides the sawyer with full plans and scale drawings for all of the above as well as a full list of materials. As an avid chess player and/or a scroll sawyer you will really appreciate this book.

About the Author

Making Wooden Chess sets

I ordered this book for my husband who does all the scroll sawing in the house because he had seen in a magazine a pattern for a chess set. He decided he wanted to try making one for himself, but the set in the magazine was a little more difficult for his level of expertise, so he wanted to try a simpler one. When we got the book, very speedy shipping by the way, he immeadiately went to town cutting some pieces out. He found the instructions with many pictures VERY helpful in learning how to cut the compound cuts needed to make each piece. Needless to say, he had made his own chess set in a couple of weeks and is now working on several more! I would definately recommend this book to someone who is interesterd in learning a new technique on the scroll saw.

I found this book to be excellent. The paterns are complex and the hints for the builder are also good. Building the chess pieces,however, is not at all easy when using one and a half inch wood.

Jim Kape is a fantastic designer and Artist , and this book is very well written .
Ive been wanting a quality chess set for some time , but good sets are like 3-4 hundred
with a wood board - I believe I can make a simalar quality set with board using this book .
