In the late 1960s, teenage Justin Case finds himself trying to discover who he is in the midst of a tumultuous cultural revolution. Rejecting the elite environment in which he was raised, Justin drops out of college in his junior year and dives headlong into the counterculture.

But when the war in Vietnam escalates and the United States military is drafting every eligible young man, Justin and Sky are faced with a difficult dilemma. Their decision is to cross the Atlantic where the three of them make a beach their new home in the enchanting country of Morocco.
Out of the military’s reach and longing to contribute to the emerging cultural revolution, the trio begin smuggling hashish into the United States. Soon it appears that some divine presence is helping them to succeed, protecting and supporting their illicit contribution to peace and love.
But even as their smuggling seems blessed by a higher power, a love triangle begins to develop that could tear the three apart forever.

Pepper Sweet was raised in a wealthy suburb before dropping out of elite society and into the 1960s hippie counterculture. He went to Andover and New Canaan High School, after which he attended four colleges but never earned a degree.
Sweet is a family man, entrepreneur, and humanitarian. He started his own business and volunteers for nonprofit organizations due to his passion for uplifting those who have been discriminated against or who have few opportunities.

What were you Thinking and Doing in The Summer of Love?

I was living in the Haight Ashbury in San Francisco in 1967 but I surely didn't know all that this book reveals about hippies, drugs, and the pros and cons of free love. The book is a great story about how several young people (ages 20 - 25) leave the traditional route of college and job, travel to Europe, live in buses or tents on the Morocco beach, smoke hashish and end up smuggling it back to the U.S (and the harrowing tale of how they did it). And it tells what the main character Justin is thinking, and how things just happen. And over the book, the story suggests how special Divine interventions occur and save their lives. The author asks the question about God's interest in our lives and suggests He is there if we are listening. It's a real story about what was meaningful to many young people in the late 1960's and early1970's.

Never Smoked Hash but This Book Was an Addiction!

I completed the book yesterday and was quite disappointed…..that I was finished with it! Sweet is a surprisingly gifted writer!
In the past few years several friends and acquaintances have written and self-published books and have provided me with copies. Of course, I felt obligated to read it (or at least start to read it; in one case, I couldn’t get past the first paragraph….when there are 15 adjectives in two sentences you pretty much know to put the book down!). So I started this book with some admitted trepidation. By the fourth chapter, I was “hooked!”
Sweet has a gift for detail and story weaving. I loved the way he would end each chapter with a “carrot” for the next chapter!
Of course, the ability to coalesce it all into a spiritual conclusion gave meaning and purpose to the story. I was left wanting more…..a sequel perhaps? Seriously, methinks his life journey has at least a couple more books in it!

Wow, what a fascinating read. I actually felt like I was on the journey with the author. It was interesting following the twists and turns of his life and to see how God turned the potential for a tragic end into a love story that is still going on. Great book!
