A modern survey of Markan study

Daniel J. Harrington's book, What Are They Saying about Mark? is a continuation of Frank J. Matera's 1987 work of the same name in which those studying Mark's gospel can learn the "ultimate realities...in ancient and present day religious and political struggles." (Harrington, 2) While both take a broad survey of scholarly works commenting on the Gospel According to Mark, Harrington chooses to deal with those studies and materials written after Matera's work was published in 1985 so as to add to the discussions on topics related to studying and better understanding Mark in the realm of general, vice exegetical, study. (Harrington, 4) Mark's Gospel is rich with debatable topics and interpretation. Each of these scholarly discussions brings a unique flavor and interpretation to this seemingly short gospel and ultimately, makes the faith in Jesus Christ richer and more attainable to all who choose to follow.

While topics of setting, Christology, disciples, composition, and narrative are all addressed in this book, it was done in a different format and under chapter headings than the original Matera work. Harrington's first chapter is designed to look backward, toward the survey conducted by Matera whose work focused on Markan commentary from the 1960s. Additionally, this opening chapter explores the change in Markan scholarship since Matera's original work, while providing commentary on his own. The second chapter is a brief look at modern literary criticism. Next, Harrington conducts a theological overview of several topics such as Christology, discipleship and faith, just to name a few. The fourth chapter takes a historical approach to the Gospel by examining the text through the lenses of those texts available at the time of Mark's writing as well as the setting as it relates to his biological narrative of Jesus. The final chapter captures some of the more engaging topics, such as feminism, political, and pastoral, that have come along in the last few decades. Harrington also provides a four page bibliography for further academic study.

Her First Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James Mystery

I read her February 2012 released book, "No Mark Upon Her" first because I didn't realize there were so many before it. Then I started over with her first book "A Share In Death". I found this story less interesting than "No Mark Upon Her" because it felt as if the author was just getting a feel for her characters, their personalities and her introduction to them was a bit clumsy. That said, I have started her second book in the series, "All Shall Be Well" and already I like Duncan Kincaid more and Gemma is seeming like a person I want to know better.
In the end, I think her books are best read in the correct order no matter how tempting it is to read her most recent books. Without slogging through the first few you will fail to get to know her characters properly and something will be lost that makes the stories better, so here is the list of her first 13:

2-All Shall be Well
3-Leave the Grave Green
4-Mourn Not Your Dead
5-Dreaming of the Bones
6-Kissed a Sad Goodbye
7-A Finer End

Deborah Crombie was recommended as a novelist by Louise Penny

Deborah Crombie was recommended as a novelist by Louise Penny, Canadian author of the Inspector Gamache series. This first Deborah Crombie book did a good job of establishing the characters for her series and of setting the place-- London's and the Scotland Yard.

The writing of this first novel showed promise and so I continued reading--right through the 16th book! By the time author Crombie wrote the second novel, she had improved so much that it was orders of magnitude better. And she certainly hit her stride by book 3.

This series begins with Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and his sergeant Gemma James who become romantically involved. The novels have multiple plot levels: 1) a crime--a murder 2) the private lives of Kincaid and James and 3) another sub-plot or two in each novel. The sub-plots vary from historical architecture to office politics to child care to sociopath behavior to rowing, brewing single malt scotch to music!

If you read the first novel and recognize that it 1) was a first novel and 2) has the big job of character establishment, and if you enjoy police procedural novels with a sense of place, I think you'll want to continue the series.

I highly recommend the entire series.

An auspicious beginning

"A Share in Death," Deborah Crombie's first mystery featuring Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and his young sergeant, Gemma James, is an auspicious beginning to what has developed into a strong series of British police procedurals. In this debut novel, Kincaid goes on holiday for a week in a Yorkshire timeshare, a beautiful Georgian house with several small apartments occupied by a mixed bag of guests. What starts out as an idyllic vacation soon turns nasty, with the discovery of a body in the hot tub, and Kincaid is called upon to use his skills as a newly-promoted detective superintendent to find out the truth. When Sgt. James arrives, more complications ensue, culminating in a surprising resolution to the mystery.

Crombie's characters are interesting and nicely developed, showing promise of the skill at characterization she gained over her next several novels. The plot, while not exactly a traditional country house mystery, has elements of that tested and true formula, with plenty of red herrings and misdirected clues. While not the strongest book in the series, it is a must-read for Crombie's fans who are curious about how this Kincaid-James partnership began.

Modern PHP Ecosystem and Best Practices

I've developed PHP applications since version 4.0, back in the days when all methods were public. Now, most of those codes are considered legacy. Before reading this book, there were many gaps in my understanding of PHP 5, not only in its new features, but also in the new best practices. This book alone helped me to upgrade myself to PHP 5.6 confidently.

The author knows how to present stuff clearly. By giving real world examples, he wants to make sure you really get it. The book is easy to read and very well written. However, it is assumed the reader already knows how to code in PHP; it is not a book for beginners, or to learn PHP's basics.

Unlike online tutorials, the examples in this book are modern, for example, the author uses a component from Symfony framework to demonstrate the Namespace usage. Not only the author explains each new feature with clear examples, but he also covers best practices for each feature.

The author is well-known because of his work at www.phptherightway.com, you can get an idea on his opinions on this website. To conclude, I highly recommend this book.

Really Great Content

This book does a great job of explaining traits, interfaces and a number of other language features I was fuzzy on. It even goes through configuring a server with nginx, deploying your project and more admin stuff I needed to improve on. I was really excited to see that stuff covered so well. It's also cool to learn a bit about HHVM and Hack. Great book, highly recommended.

A Must Read for PHP Developers

Excellent ROI. I have been a web dev for almost 20 years and was a "hard-core" PHP guy for some of those years, then didn't touch PHP for over 8 years. PHP grew up while I was off in Python land! In my opinion, Josh Lockhart's Modern PHP is a must-read for any PHP programmer. Sure there are lots of things he could go into deeper, but this book was needed--an excellent overview of almost everything a PHP developer needs to know from installing and configuring PHP and web servers, code style, recommended directory structures, the newer supported object oriented concepts, testing, debugging, profiling, deployments, using Composer, and even a good overview of HHVM and Hack--enough to help you know if you want to dive in more at this time.

I will surely be referring to this book to lean on some of Josh's recommendations as I setup new projects.

A little additional Josh Lockhart plug--I learned about him when I chose to use his Slim PHP micro framework in my latest project. That project was rolled into production about 90 days ago to very happy customers. I am delighted with Slim. It does the very basic plumbing I'd rather not code and does it very well. Then it stays the heck out of my way so I can write my own PHP to do what I need to do.

Part one is already published and Part three will be published on July 21, 2015***This book was such a pleasure to write as it seemed to just flow out of me. Well, flowed under the direct supervision of caffeine and getting trapped at a McDonald's during one particularly bad rainstorm. Nothing is quite so motivating as heavy rain preventing you from returning to your car.But then again, nothing is half quite as distracting as having to decipher the best method of dumping puddles out of your shoes. Especially considering you would have to be barefoot in a McDonald's. And they probably frown upon that.

Jump into this great read! It's steamy and twisty.

A great second work by Miss Eliza. You will be on the edge of your seat wondering what Aileen is going to choose, go home or stay with the very hunky Roderick. As always, the love scenes were very steamy and the writing is fantastic. Worth the read, you'll fall in love with Roderick and the series. I only wish there was more.
