Few fields of Islamic studies have witnessed as much progress in modern times as Ismaili studies, and in even fewer instances has the role of a single individual been as pivotal in initiating progress as that of Wladimir Ivanow (1886-1970), whose memoirs are now published here for the first time. The breakthrough in modern Ismaili studies occurred mainly as a result of the recovery and study of a large number of texts relating to the field, which had not been available to the earlier generations of orientalists. The Persian and Arabic Ismaili manuscripts, many edited and published by Ivanow, reflect a rich diversity of intellectual and literary traditions. Ivanow left his native Russia soon after the October Revolution of 1917 and settled in India where he was formally commissioned in 1931 by Sultan Muhammad Shah Aga Khan III, the 48th Imam of the Nizari Ismailis, to investigate the history and teachings of the Ismailis. Henceforth, Ivanow began the systematic recovery and study of texts from this tradition of Shi'i Islam, discovered in India, the Middle East and Central Asia, amongst other regions. He also played a key role in the establishment of the Ismaili Society - the first research institution of its kind with a major collection of Ismaili manuscripts. Ivanow made these manuscripts available to other scholars, thereby contributing to further progress in the field. Ivanow completed his memoirs, entitled Fifty Years in the East, in 1968, shortly before his death. This work, originally written in Russian, is comprised of an autobiography and vivid accounts from his travels. These convey his ethnologist's interest in 'the archaeology of the way of life' and profound curiosity for regional customs and languages. The memoirs, written in Tehran during Ivanow's final years, have now been edited with substantial annotations by Farhad Daftary. They reveal for the first time the circumstances under which modern Ismaili studies were initiated and an eyewitness account of several regions during the early decades of the twentieth century before the rapid onset of modernisation.

An international authority on Ismaili studies, he is the author and editor of several acclaimed books in the field, including A History of Shi'i Islam (2013), A Modern History of the Ismailis (2011), Ismaili Literature (2004), A Short History of the Ismailis (1998), The Assassin Legends (1994) and The Isma'ilis: Their History and Doctrines (1990; 2nd ed., 2007). Dr. Daftary's books have been translated into Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Urdu and numerous European languages.

This is a great Huggly title, and like all the others in the series, it's a huge hit with our 3-and-a-half year old. Perfect for bedtime or for read-on-your-own, the fun pictures, the great cast of characters and the riotous story lines win all around. Huggly, Boote and Grubble are the least scary monters under the earth, and their mischief and adventures are all very good-natured.

Students, the international edition is cheaper!

I used this book for my introductory IR class last term. The layout of the book is easy to follow, and best of all, the main points of each section is highlighted and inserted into the section that you are reading. If you're buying this book for class, I recommend getting the international edition. Not only is the content the same, but it's cheaper too!

If there is any public person I'd like to meet

I started listening to this set of ideas 30 years ago and have based most of my important decisions using the guidelines within. I call it my bible. I still listen to it when I feel I need direction. I've purchased and listen to other peoples ideas, none have been a clear and understanding as this one. If there is any public person I'd like to meet, it would be Denis Waitley. Thanks Mr Waitley

Still good, but I miss my cassettes of this.

I bought this because my cassette tape set of this is worn out, and I'm getting rid of all my cassette tapes and players anyway in favor of CDs & MP3 players.

The cassette tape set was awesome. I'd recommend it to anyone. I was hoping to get the same audio in a more modern form, but the CD content had been edited (and in parts re-recorded) from the original. It's still not bad, but it lacks some of the "ooomph" of the original. But I miss my cassette tapes.

Best Source for History of the Spanish as German Allies on the Russian Front

Just got the book yesterday and just finished Chapter 5; its hard to put down! If you have a historical interest in Franco's Spanish volunteers fighting in Russia in WW2, you can't find a better source. The 2 authors' detail in names and places, complete with area maps, can't be beat. How they were respected by their German allies fighting to their flanks and their gallant reputation as close quarters fighters is consistently supported with specific facts, especially around the Leningrad front.

I have read this book back in the mid to late 80'S i could not find it any where except in hard back for a great deal of money more than i could spend.I will spend free time reading this again. While stationed in Germany this book won me a three day pass from my BN commander because I stumped him about a historical Question about this subject and was able to prove it to him with a copy that the library had . this book got here a lot quicker than i expected. Very pleased Thanks

Excellent coverage

Another book detailing a little know part of WWII. This book describes the very beginning of this formation the reason why and the composition of this formation. The leaders are covered and the many battle that this formation participated in. Great read on this division and its sister formation that became. In action all the time on the eastern front. New insight into this formation and great fighting ablities.
